This recruitment is to fill three fulltime permanent positions located as follows:

Region 1: Duty station located at the Walla Walla office.

Region 4: Duty station located at the La Conner office.

Region 5: Duty station is negotiable along I-5 corridor in Lewis and Cowlitz Counties in a home office.

Job Summary

This position assists the District Biologist in the implementation of Wildlife Program goals, objectives, and assignments. Key responsibilities include:

Conducting Wildlife Surveys: Inventory and monitor wildlife populations, format and store data, analyze data, prepare reports; develop and follow survey protocols;

Managing Wildlife Populations: Assess population responses to recreational and subsistence harvest, habitat changes; capturewildlife, augment populations, and make wildlife management recommendations to the District Biologist;

Managing Wildlife Related Recreation: Obtain input on wildlife-related recreation from users and facilitate hunter access on private lands;

Managing Wildlife Habitats: Restore and enhance wildlife habitat, evaluate habitat quality and quantity, and prepare documents for permits to implement habitat modifications;

Conducting Various Wildlife Management Tasks: Supervise temporary staff, direct volunteers, communicate with the public on diverse wildlife issues, participate in public meetings, give presentations, and assist the District Biologist in securing funding for wildlife management activities.

Approximately 70% of the work takes place in the field.  You must be willing and able to work long irregular hours with a non-scheduled workweek and travel, perform aerial and/or marine surveys, work in inclement weatherwalking over difficult terrain, bend, stoop, carry up to 40 pounds, load and transport equipment and gear, safely operate motor vehicles and small boats in field situations, and visually discriminate when identifying and distinguishing biological and physical features.  You will also be expected to acquire and maintain a valid driver’s license and complete first aid training.

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the State of Washington, Department of Fish & Wildlife, and the Washington Association of Fish and Wildlife Professionals (WAFWP).  As a condition of employment you must either join the union and pay union dues, or pay the union a representational or other fee within 30 days of the date you are put into pay status.

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in wildlife management, wildlife biology, or wildlife ecology and one year of relevant experience is required for this position.  A Master’s degree or above with an applicable specialty may substitute for the required experience.  The best qualified applicants will demonstrate competencies in the following areas;

Knowledge of:

  1. Wildlife population relationships, ecology, andwildlife habitat relationships;
  2. Wildlife survey methods;
  3. Principles of wildlife harvest management;
  4. Species identification of birds, mammals, herps, and invertebrates;
  5. Wildlife management tools and field techniques,including experience working with both hunted (game) and non-hunted (non-game) species;
  6. Working knowledge of applicable computer hardware and software (MS/Office, ArcGis);

The ability to:

  1. Conduct data analysis and make inferences from data, including coursework, training, or experience working with statistics, biometrics, ArcGis, and population modeling;

8. Speak and write effectively;

9. Conduct field surveys to collect data;
