Washington State Department of Transportation’s Strategic Assessment Office (SAO) is recruiting for two positions, a Data Analyst Intern (Transportation Planning Specialist 1) and a Transportation Data and Policy Analyst (TPS 2).  SAO is a small but dynamic cross-functional unit that works with all agency programs, modes and offices and supports senior executives and external partners such as the Governor’s Office, Legislature and OFM. The work of the office is considered innovative and is highly regarded and widely recognized as a national best practice.

The internship is a temporary position (approximately six months). This position provides technical support and research in the analysis, development and production of WSDOT’s performance measurement reports. The incumbent will perform beginning level professional data analysis duties and be engaged in a variety of public accountability and performance measurement tasks, including data management, Gray Notebook development, transportation planning, report and professional writing, public involvement, website content development, policy development, and coordination with multiple external and internal transportation partners. The Transportation Data and Policy Analyst position performs advanced analytical, statistical and editorial assignments to achieve well-defined objectives that support the publication of system performance information various agency reports and SAO system analysis products/publications including the Gray Notebook. This position is responsible for independently, quickly, and accurately analyzing large amounts of transportation systems data and narrative to translate technical information into well-written “Plain English” reports using WSDOT’s Performance Journalism approach.
