Salary: $35-50,000 Full-time Equivalent – Dependent on Experience

The Center for Natural Lands Management (CNLM) is a nonprofit 501(3)(c) organization,created in 1990, whose mission is the perpetual stewardship of natural and created conservation lands, sensitive species, and their resident ecosystems. Stewardship activities are
currently divided between California and Washington. In the State of Washington, CNLM’s South Puget Sound Program focuses on conservation of one of the rarest ecosystems in the United States, the prairie and oak woodlands of Cascadia, especially those lands and habitats within the South Sound Region. In that Region, the Program aims to protect, restore habitats, and support recovery of rare species that are candidates for federal listing.

Currently in California, seventy-five preserves, encompassing over 30,000 acres throughout the state, are within CNLM’s portfolio, with new preserves added regularly. The preserves vary in
size from three to thousands of acres and are managed under direct ownership, conservation easements, or contracts. Central to the CNLM’s mission and fundamental to its success are the principles of rigorous cost estimation for managing conservation areas in perpetuity and application of appropriate scientific information for conservation and restoration. CNLM has a well-established practice of
selecting for and investing in excellent staff to fulfill its mission. Currently, CNLM is headquartered in Temecula, CA, although most senior staff reside elsewhere and communication is more often by phone and email than by in-person meetings.
Essential Functions:
The Conservation Analyst will conduct tasks to further the cooperative conservation of rare prairie species within Cascadia as part of the Regional Rare Species Program. This project is grant-funded to develop and implement techniques to promote recovery of four rare species: two butterflies, a bird, and a mammal. Each of these species is a candidate for federal listing and the goal is to promote the proactive management of these species to preclude the need to
list these species and to minimize potential negative impacts especially those on military
operations on Joint Base Lewis McChord.
The Analyst will develop and compile information concerning conservation and funding efforts
within the region. The synthesis of this information will be presented to a wide-range of conservation partners, including government and non-government agencies and private
individuals. The Analyst will also assist, or lead, in the planning and implementation of workshops and other group meetings to obtain or present conservation information and to
facilitate the implementation of innovative conservation actions. Partner participation is critical to conservation success and the Analyst must be able to successfully work with and reflect a
range of partner perspectives and needs. The Conservation Analyst position is a part-time position that reports to the Rare Species Program Manager.
RESPONSIBILITIES
 Coordinate the compilation and assist in production of Rare Species Program Quarterly and
Annual Reports.
 Analyze information concerning, and produce summary, of ACUB Program actions and
accomplishments.
 Assist with organization, coordination and administration of multi-partner, ecoregional
restoration project (State Wildlife Grant).
 Lead or assist with planning and attend species-specific working group meetings. Take and
publish minutes from those working group meetings.
 Assist in the development and implementation of public communication products for the
Regional Rare Species Program and the South Sound Program in general. Maintain current
content on www.southsoundprairies.org and help develop www.cascadiaprairieoak.org
 Assist Program in administrative tasks related to Americorps and student intern programs.
 Complete additional tasks for the Regional Rare Species and South Sound Programs as
assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
 Bachelors of Science (or Arts) degree. Advanced degree is desirable. Experience with
and interest in, natural resource conservation and land management efforts.
 Relevant experience in report production and analysis; at least three years of such
experience is desirable
 Excellent social and supervisory skills with demonstrated effectiveness in working
collaboratively, leading volunteer and public education efforts, and professionally
representing CNLM at public and client meetings
 Proven self-starter, able to work efficiently and effectively with minimal supervision and
able to appropriately use initiative to meet project goals; having the maturity and discretion
to seek advice and policy guidance when needed and appropriate
 Ability to manage multiple priorities, with assignments sometimes coming from a number
of sources. Able to structure time effectively and meet deadlines
 Effective communication skills—written and oral; able to prepare succinct and cogent
reports and plans. Ability to communicate to various audiences including lay public, funders
and conservation partners.
 Strong administrative skills including attention to detail and numerical ability. Ability to
plan, administer and record results of work-team meetings and activities.
 Working knowledge of Windows 7 operating systems and PC applications such as
Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to maintain and update website and other communications
tools.
 Must have and maintain a valid Washington driver’s license and safe driving record.
WORKING CONDITIONS
 Regularly works indoors in an office setting. Frequently visits natural lands and other
areas – hikes across, and conducts work within native habitats and uneven ground.
 Regularly sits or stands at a desk or computer workstation.
 Frequently required to operate a CNLM vehicle.
 Frequently works alone.
 Some evening and weekend responsibilities, including travel.
 Occasionally lifts, positions, or otherwise moves objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
