The City of Cannon Beach seeks qualified applicants for six Rocky Shore Interpreter positions for the Haystack Rock Awareness Program (HRAP). These seasonal, part-time positions run March through September under the supervision of the HRAP Coordinator.

Description: HRAP is a stewardship and environmental educational program whose mission is to protect, through education, the intertidal and seabird ecology of the Marine Garden and Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge at Haystack Rock.

Duties: Rocky Shore Interpreters educate the public about intertidal and seabird ecology during low tide hours at Haystack Rock; support school group field trips in May and June; promote natural resource conservation and stewardship; assist program volunteers; redirect visitors engaging in prohibited activities; set-up and break down HRAP’s mobile education unit; collect accurate data; participate in program events (e.g., “Puffin Watch” during 4th of July); and maintain equipment off the beach. Beach schedule varies daily around low tide, therefore applicants must be willing to work early mornings, middays, evenings and weekends. Work schedules are coordinated one month in advance. HRAP’s team includes 1 full-time Coordinator, 1 part-time Intern, 10 part-time seasonal staff and 80-100 community volunteers.

Requirements: High School graduate, valid driver’s license, strong work-ethic, good interpersonal communication skills, exercise of judgment, initiative, attention to detail and teamwork. Training will be provided in the areas of intertidal and seabird identification, program set-up and break-down, data collection, temporary species collection, beach driving and equipment maintenance. Relevant experience preferred.

Salary: $10-12/hour; based on experience. Position is part-time (10-20 hrs/week), seasonal, temporary and not eligible for benefits. Busiest months are May – August.

 

Start Dates: As early as March and no later than June 2013. Interviews begin in November 2012 and continue until positions are filled.
