The City of Cannon Beach seeks qualified applicants for the Volunteer Coordinator and

Education Intern position for the Haystack Rock Awareness Program (HRAP). This parttime

position runs February – October 2013 under the supervision of HRAP Coordinator.

Description: HRAP is a stewardship and environmental educational program whose

mission is to protect, through education, the intertidal and seabird ecology of the Marine

Garden and Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge at Haystack Rock.

Duties: The Volunteer Coordinator and Education Intern supports HRAP’s mission by:

serving as a Rocky Shore Interpreter during low tide hours at Haystack Rock (25%);

recruiting, training and scheduling volunteers for beach programs and events (30%);

scheduling and preparing visiting groups for their field trips to Haystack Rock (25%);

and assisting off the beach with program events, maintenance and development (20%).

Beach schedule varies daily around low tide, therefore applicants must be willing to work

early mornings, middays, evenings and weekends. Work schedules are coordinated one

month in advance. HRAP’s team includes 1 full-time Coordinator, 1 part-time Intern, 10

part-time seasonal staff and 80-100 community volunteers.

Requirements: High School graduate, valid driver’s license, strong work ethic, good

written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, exercise of judgment, initiative,

attention to detail and teamwork. Training will be provided in the areas of intertidal and

seabird identification, program set-up and break-down, data collection, temporary species

collection, beach driving and equipment maintenance. Relevant experience preferred.

Salary: $13/hour. Position is part-time (averaging 25 hours/week, not to exceed 1,000

hours total), temporary and not eligible for benefits. Busiest months are April-August.

Internship: Summer Internship in Sustainable Agriculture, Center for Environmental Farming Systems (Goldsboro, NC)

Internship Background

We are seeking highly-motivated undergraduate students from a variety of different backgrounds, with a strong interest in sustainable agriculture, to participate in a unique 8-week summer internship. Summer Interns with the Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) come from all over the country and world to work with faculty members to learn about the concepts and practices of various aspects of sustainable agriculture through hands-on farm work, lectures and discussions, community engagement, and field trips to local farms and markets. In addition, a highlight of this program is that interns will gain hands-on sustainable agriculture research knowledge through working with a diversity of CEFS Faculty Researchers from various disciplines at CEFS’ 2,000-acre research farm in Goldsboro, N.C..

Goals

For students completing the CEFS Sustainable Agriculture Internship Program, the goals are to

• describe sustainable agriculture and community food systems from a broad systems perspective;
• observe and evaluate a variety of agricultural systems and practices for their sustainability;
• improve professional development and collaborative learning interactions with university faculty and staff, farmers, extension agents, researchers, non-governmental organizations and the community;
• communicate how sustainable agriculture research is conducted, basic techniques, and data collected from a variety of disciplines in sustainable agriculture
