UBB DEVELOPMENT & COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR

Job Description
University
Beyond Bars (UBB), whose mission is to provide access to higher education for
WA state prisoners, is seeking a dynamic, enthusiastic, and seasoned
professional with superior interpersonal and communication skills, along with a
commitment to the mission of the organization, for the newly created position
of Development & Communications Director (DCD).  The DCD will lead the organization in
becoming financially sustainable by establishing and executing a development
strategy and plan in collaboration with the Executive Director (ED) and Board
of Directors.

Minimum Qualifications
1.      Bachelor’s degree
in a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. (Master’s degree a plus).
2.      Minimum of four years development experience in
the nonprofit sector, including demonstrated success in leading innovative
fundraising and grant writing effortsto meet ambitious goals.
3.      Exceptional
communication skills, including the ability to write clearly and persuasively; produce successful grant proposals,
solicitations and reports; and conduct effective individual and/or group
presentations.
4.      Commitment
to and experience in fundraising and relationship building in diverse
communities, including those most affected by incarceration.
5.      Experience establishing policies and procedures
for relational and donor databases.Proficient
in MS Office programs (Excel, Publisher, etc.), WordPress or equivalent software, and
various social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.).
6.      Experience in developing and managing budgets
and preparing financial reports.
7.      Strong
organizational, planning, management, and supervisory skills, including
partnership-building and event planning.
8.      Ability to work from a home office with flexibilityto work on a variety of projects simultaneously and meet
deadlines.

Responsibilities
1.      Lead the
development and execution of UBB’s annual development strategy and planto meet
organization’s budgeted goals, including grants, individual giving, major donors,
corporate sponsors, foundations, special events, and other forms of revenue
generation (such as web-based sales).
2.      This position is
responsible for all aspects of grant proposals to public and private entities,
including grant writing; coordinating and facilitating grant research and
submission; generating reports including relevant
financial and statistical information; keeping a
calendar of timetables, milestones, submissions and other deadlines; and
maintaining files and records of all grants submitted.
3.      With the support
of the ED and Board Development committee, plan, coordinate and implements all
facets of the individual fund drives and major donor campaign.
4.      Cultivate and
nurture relationships with current and potential corporate & foundation
sponsors, and other funders to secure financial support.
5.      Oversee
the planning, production and promotion of annual fundraising event, including volunteer coordination; support additional events as needed.
6.      Support the expanded participation of board
members, staff, and volunteers in all fundraising efforts.
7.      Implement and oversee records management of
donor database.
8.      Prepare and manage donor acknowledgments for
individuals, as well as corporate, foundation, and government partners and
collaborators.
9.      Coordinate with UBB board treasurer on
expenditures and collection of funds from various sources for UBB, and participate in the annual budget planning
process by providing input regarding funding sources, strategies, goal setting,
and private grant requests to fulfill agency budget requirements.
10.  In conjunction
with the ED, the DCD will oversee public relations, communications and
marketing programs, including media relations; website content; development of
electronic and printed communications; coordination and management of social
media; development of annual giving materials, newsletters, promotional
mailings, annual reports, events materials, etc.
11.  Other duties as
assigned by management.

Beyond Bars (UBB) offers post-secondary education to the incarcerated in
Washington, particularly prisoners of color at the WA State Reformatory in
Monroe, WA, with the twin goals of reducing recidivism by preparing offenders
to reenter society as successful, productive members of their communities, and
reducing prison violence by providing meaningful intellectual pursuits and hope
