Good afternoon,

I am writing to share a fantastic volunteer opportunity with you.  The City of Lacey is hiring an AmeriCorps volunteer to serve from September 16, 2014- July 30, 2015.  This position allows going to school or working at another job during off hours so it would be great for an MES student interested in going into Environmental Education or a recent undergrad graduate.  The AmeriCorps volunteer will perform a wide variety of tasks and gain some great real-life experience in environmental education and outreach related to water.  Below are some of the essential tasks:

  • Developing educational activities for school groups, teachers, and public events.
  • Facilitating community service projects for school and community groups.
  • Coordinating field trips for school and community groups.
  • Educating the public about local programs at outreach events.
  • Collecting water quality samples from local lakes and streams.
  • Collaborating with several regional environmental education and outreach groups of which the City participates, which will include the Thurston County Stream Team, South Sound GREEN, the LOTT Clean Water Alliance, the Thurston County Stormwater Outreach Group, Thurston County ECONet, and the Environmental Educators Technical Advisory Committee.

The AmeriCorps volunteer must be between 18-25 years old on the first day of service.  As you both know I completed two years working as an AmeriCorps Environmental Educator and that experience along with my almost complete MES degree has helped me get a full time job in environmental education.  This could be a great opportunity for a current student to gain that same experience.  Please share this opportunity with any students you think may be interested.

Thank you!
