About the Position
The Public Works, Water Resources Line of Business is looking for a qualified and motivated professional to assist with the development and implementation of the City of Olympia’s Habitat and Stewardship Strategy.
This position will be a ½ time (20 hours per week) project funded position. Funding for the position is anticipated to support this position for up to 2 years from the date of hire.

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Bring an in-depth understanding of habitat data collection methodologies and habitat planning principles.
  • A strong interest in and knowledge of urban habitat restoration techniques.
  • Ability to develop data collection methods that are statistically accurate and consistent with industry standards.
  • Ability to develop stewardship and habitat enhancement plans, (including the collection and analysis of both field and remote sensing data).
  • A thorough understanding of forest mensuration techniques including variable and fixed radius plot sampling, regeneration sampling, noxious/invasive species sampling, snag and coarse woody debris sampling.
  • A thorough understanding of forest habitat classification methodologies.
  • An thorough understanding of forest stand dynamics including the relationships between basal area per acre, trees per acre, stand density index (SDI), relative density (RD) and how such measurements relate to the habitat potential of a site.
  • A thorough understanding of how snag and course woody debris can be measured and evaluated relative to optimal standards established in the industry and/or scientific literature.

The essential functions of this position include but are not limited to:
  • Responsible for completing program duties as assigned, including research, program planning, implementation, program monitoring, and budgeting.
  • Assist with developing and attaining program goals and objectives through effective program planning and implementation.

  • Develop and maintain program standards and administer program within legal requirements.

 Typical Qualifications:
Experience/Education:
  • At least two years experience in the collection and analysis of habitat related data.
  • At least a 2 year degree in wildlife biology,forestry, or related natural resource science is required, with a 4 year degree preferred.
  • Additional related experience may be substituted for the degree on a year for year basis.
  • Additional education and/or experience in habitat planning and/or restoration is desired.
Special Requirements:
  • Must possess a valid Washington State Driver’s License.

  • Frequent and successful contact/interaction with others in a variety of roles and representing various levels of authority both inside and outside the organization is critical to job and program success.

Supervision:
  • May supervise assigned clerical, programming, and operations staff or volunteers including completing performance evaluations.

  • The Program Specialist is accountable for the quality and effectiveness of assigned programs and events.
Working Conditions:
  • The Program Specialist works in an office part of the time.
  • Mobility sufficient for field work will be necessary, , requiring bending, stooping, climbing, walking over rough terrain, and exposure to weather conditions.
  • Physical ability to carry or otherwise transport heavy boxes, displays, exhibit furnishings, etc. may be necessary.
  • There is occasional stress related to meeting project and event time lines.
