COMPENSATION

  • Salary is $3,041 to $3,498 per month of full time work.
  • Experience and training may be considered in salary placement.

POSITION PURPOSE

This position supports a diverse and energetic student population at the Tacoma Program of The Evergreen State College. The primary purposes for this position are to design, implement and evaluate activities that address the recruitment and academic success of students at the Tacoma Program. The person in the position will offer specialized support to students in the areas of academic, personal and life skills as they relate to success in college. The Tacoma Program motto “Enter to Learn, Depart to Serve” demonstrates the need for a strong connection with communities of Tacoma. The Coordinator will serve as a liaison with the communities of Tacoma and the various student services housed on the Olympia Campus.

NATURE AND SCOPE
Organizational Fit

This position reports to the Managing Director of the Tacoma Program within the Academic Division of the College and works closely and collaboratively with Evergreen’s Student Affairs staff.

Environmental Characteristics

The College provides students with opportunities for academic learning and self-development through counseling, workshops, classes, internships and advising. These are integral components of the curriculum. The Tacoma Program currently serves approximately 200 full-time, upper-division undergraduate students and 10 lower-division students who are enrolled in a “Bridge” Program in partnership with the Tacoma Community College. This welcoming Program has at the center of its organizational philosophy a model that accommodates the working adult student.

Balance

Time spent in the position is divided among the following areas: recruitment, intake and retention support activities; advising and referrals; travel and liaison work at the Olympia Campus; group workshop development and delivery; advise student activities coordinator; administrative work (e.g. coordinate student services resources with faculty curriculum development; staff/faculty meetings, training); college governance work.

Recruitment

In collaboration with the Director, the Coordinator designs and implements a recruitment plan that is updated yearly.  Recruitment activities include but are not limited to the following: schedule and attend transfer fairs and information table visits and make classroom presentations at area community and technical colleges, employer sponsored employee education fairs and other appropriate community events. Recruitment activities will also include providing information and referral to Tacoma Community College “Bridge” program students. The Coordinator will also provide intake and orientation programs and services for applicants and newly admitted students.

Advising

The Coordinator will, in collaboration with the Tacoma Program faculty and Olympia Campus Advising staff, assist students with academic and career planning, including planning for graduate and professional school application and provide information and referral services for students with personal or crisis counseling needs.

Retention

The Coordinator will, in collaboration with the Tacoma Program faculty and Olympia Campus Advising staff, assist students who may be experiencing academic difficulty or personal life issues that are impacting their ability to succeed in college and, if not dealt with, could result in their dropping out of school. The Coordinator will also design and deliver information sessions and workshops designed to support students’ academic success.

Administrative and Liaison Work

The Coordinator will work with Enrollment Services and appropriate Academic Deans to improve admission, registration and financial aid processes for Tacoma Program students. The Coordinator will also design and maintain record-keeping processes for use in tracking students’ progress from initial inquiry to admission, enrollment, retention and graduation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience in a higher education setting performing academic and/or personal needs assessment.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in Student Development, Community Development, Education, Student Personnel Administration, or related field.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Develop strategies to meet student academic needs, and monitor their progress by performing comprehensive academic skills and personal needs assessment of Tacoma students under the leadership of the Managing Director and in collaboration with faculty.
  • Assist students from enrollment to graduation by advising students in all phases of registration; work with students to inform them about academic options, including how to do academic/curriculum planning at Evergreen.
  • Be available to advise students by scheduling and maintaining appropriate hours.
  • Maintain and continuously update knowledge of college policies and procedures and provide information on same to students by serving as liaison for Tacoma students with Olympia offices including, but not limited to: Admissions, Registration and Records, Financial Aid, Student Accounts, First Peoples’ Advising Services, Academic Advising, KEY Student Services, Access Services, Career Development and Learning Resource Center.
  • Assist new students in their transition to Evergreen by designing, implementing and evaluating quarterly orientation activities.
  • Assist students in achieving academic and professional goals by designing, implementing and evaluating programs of academic counseling, advising, advocacy and mentoring as appropriate.
  • Assist students in locating appropriate support services by designing, implementing and evaluating a program in resource referral and problem solving.
  • Provide up to date information and advising services by developing and maintaining comprehensive understanding of the Tacoma Program curriculum and Student Service resources, both within the college and the community, and by maintaining strong community relations and knowledge of community resources.
  • Coordinate program efforts with the faculty and staff of the Tacoma Program and advise the Tacoma Director and the core faculty on student development needs by participating in planning meetings and faculty seminars.
  • Assist in continuous improvement of student services programming by conducting and reporting on assessment of various aspects of the Tacoma Program Student Service program, including baseline studies on student satisfaction, and educational outcomes.
  • Assist the College in collaborative governance by participating in a college governance activity.
  • Provide information to inquirers by answering phones and greeting visitors as needed.
  • Assist senior level students with transitioning out of Evergreen by coordinating Senior Synthesis Presentations and graduation activities.
  • Coordinate efforts and assist in the design of recruitment publications and improvements on the Tacoma Program website.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Strong skill and ability to design, implement and evaluate programs and activities.
  • Excellent skills and abilities in multicultural counseling or advising including assisting students with academic and career planning and providing referral services for students with personal or crisis counseling needs.
  • Understanding of student centered higher education retention and intervention services and strategies.
  • Excellent written, presentation and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with people of diverse cultures and underrepresented backgrounds.

  • Ability to work under pressure and coordinate multiple tasks requiring a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail in an open, highly interactive office environment with continuous student contact.

  • Ability to work evenings and occasional weekends.
  • Ability to design and maintain record-keeping processes.
  • Ability to use qualitative and quantitative assessment tools.
  • Ability to understand and comply with College policies, the Social Contract, and regulations including FERPA.
  • Familiarity and comfort with various computer programs; skill in database management, web, social media, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Effective community relations skills.
  • Skill in working with adult students.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
