The mission of the Environmental Assessment Program (EAP) is to measure and assess environmental conditions in Washington State for the purpose of providing credible science to guide environmental decisions. The EAP program provides a range of scientific, monitoring, laboratory, and quality assurance services. The program has a Marine Benthic Ecologist (Natural Resource Scientist 1) position open at our Headquarters building in Lacey, WA. Please Note: This position is part-time (20 hours per week) includes benefits.

This position contributes to the Environmental Assessment Program’s mission by serving as a natural resource scientist with specialized experience in marine benthic ecology and taxonomy. Under administrative supervision, performs specialized natural resource research on benthic invertebrate species abundance and diversity in order to assess status and trends in Puget Sound benthos.

Specialized duties include:

  • Using knowledge of marine benthic invertebrate taxonomy, performs specialized laboratory processing, including sorting and taxonomy of common and abundant species.
  • Generates draft benthic invertebrate voucher sheets.
  • Under technical direction of senior staff, maintains the Puget Sound benthic invertebrate reference and voucher collection and database, and the taxonomic and ecological literature collection.
  • Under technical direction of senior staff, participates in shipboard collection, processing, and preservation of Puget Sound sediments and benthic invertebrates.
 Qualifications:
Required Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree with major study in Marine Ecology, Marine Benthic Ecology, or Marine Invertebrate Zoology.

AND


Two years professional research work experience in Marine Ecology, Marine Benthic Ecology, or Marine Invertebrate Zoology.
A Master’s degree in Marine Ecology, Marine Benthic Ecology, or Marine Invertebrate Zoology will substitute for the required experience.

Desirable Qualifications

Experience in collecting, processing, and analyzing marine sediment and benthic invertebrate samples, including familiarity and experience with marine invertebrate taxonomy.
