Location: Office is in Lake Stevens, Washington. Work area extends throughout the Stillaguamish, Snohomish, and Island County Watersheds in Western Washington State.
Qualifications: Candidates must be 18 to 25 years old at the time of hire and legally eligible to work in the US. The ideal candidate for this position is a motivated natural science graduate or near-graduate that is looking for on-the-job experience. Experience in field biology, habitat restoration, and/or environmental education a plus. Please detail these experiences in your application. Sound Salmon Solutions is seeking an articulate, people-oriented, self-motivated leader who is both an independent worker and a team player. A willingness to work outside in all types of weather and on rough terrain is essential. Basic computer skills including email, word processing, and spreadsheets a must. Applicant will be required to pass three background checks by the FBI, Washington State Patrol, and National Sex Offender Public Registry.
Compensation: $9.32 per hour plus medical insurance. After 12 months of employment, an AmeriCorps Education Award valued at $5,645 will be awarded. Education awards can be applied to education loans or used for future education. Payments on educational loans are deferred while employed in these positions. Salmon Habitat Restoration (60%): The Washington Conservation Corps member will be involved in all aspects of salmon habitat restoration projects including: project development, design, coordination, implementation, monitoring, and reporting. Projects may include in-stream restoration, large wood placement, erosion control, culvert replacement, riparian revegetation, site maintenance, invasive plant survey and control, salmon carcass distributions, river and beach clean-ups, and wetland enhancement. Member will utilize GPS and GIS (ArcGIS 10.0) for project development and reporting. As part of project development the member may attend community and partner meetings in which Sound Salmon Solutions is involved. Monitoring may include stream and riparian habitat assessment, photo-point, water quality, macroinvertebrate, and vegetation monitoring. Member will have opportunities to participate in outreach to landowners and the general public, to educate them about best management practices, stream habitat restoration techniques, and invasive weed control.
Education, Outreach and Volunteer Coordination (40%) This component is focused on merging habitat restoration with community participation and environmental education. Educational and outreach activities will be conducted for all ages. WCC member will assist with event coordination tasks including: volunteer sign ups, materials & tools logistics, website updates, and writing press releases. He/she will also assist with implementation of a school curriculum designed to meet Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards. Additionally, the WCC member will provide presentations and service-learning opportunities to students and community groups throughout Snohomish, King and Island Counties. He/she will perform outreach at fairs and festivals to recruit new volunteers to the program and educate community members. The member will also assist with creating outreach materials, such as newsletters, listserve bulletins, and flyers.

We anticipate that the WCC member will gain a basic understanding of salmon and their habitat needs; how science, politics and community interests merge; and how different agencies and organizations are approaching salmon recovery.
