Ecological Restoration Graduate Intern

POSITION DESCRIPTION
Capitol Land Trust is seeking an enthusiastic graduate intern to lead a riparian habitat restoration
project on Mima Creek in Thurston County. The ideal candidate will be available from January
2015 through June 2015, for a part-time internship position (10-20 hours a week on a flexible
schedule). The majority of the intern’s time will be spent leading the Mima Creek Riparian
Restoration project from our office in downtown Olympia and at the project site in south
Thurston County. The intern may also assist Capitol Land Trust’s Conservation & Stewardship
Program staff.
With support from staff, the Ecological Restoration Graduate Intern will lead a riparian habitat
restoration project to completion. This includes: assessing the site; managing the restoration
budget; designing a planting plan; coordinating with the landowner and with work crews;
recruiting volunteers; coordinating and leading volunteer work parties; and preparing an as-built
and site maintenance plan. Successful completion of this internship will be an amazing addition
to the résumé of anyone wanting to continue in the field of natural resource management or
restoration ecology!
Specifically this position will:
• Provide project management for a three-acre, grant-funded, habitat restoration project.
• Recruit, train and supervise volunteers for site-based restoration activities.
• Build and maintain positive relationships with the landowner, community members and
volunteers through communications and events.
• Provide GIS support for the restoration project, including creating project maps and
updating GIS data files with new property information and restoration project activities.
• Support the day-to-day stewardship program and activities of the Trust, and foster a work
environment characterized by excellence, teamwork, creativity and professionalism

ELIGIBILITY
• Bachelor degree in conservation, botany, biology, ecology, natural resource management,
or related field, or currently enrolled in an environmental studies Master’s program.
• Very self-motivated, with a demonstrated ability to meet deadlines.
• High attention to detail, and excellent written and oral English communication skills.
• Experience, education and skills in one or more of the following areas: restoration
ecology, conservation biology, ecology, natural resources management, GIS, or volunteer
coordination.
• Knowledge of southwest Washington flora, fauna, culture and geography preferred.
• Physically able to conduct outdoor fieldwork in all weather conditions and traverse
through rough terrain.
• Valid Washington State driver’s license and a reliable vehicle.
COMPENSATION
• This internship may be completed for credit.
• Mileage costs will be reimbursed for travel to field sites.
