Location: Unity, ME Category: Professional Posted On: Thu Oct 23 2014 Job Description:Provide leadership to the college community in advancing the college’s commitment to sustainability. As part of the EVP team, work collaboratively with all levels of employees at the College including senior administration, mid-level managers, faculty, staff and students to plan, develop and facilitate coordinated sustainability efforts. Support others, especially students, to gain the knowledge, skills, and motivation to realize sustainability. Support and evaluate existing programs and guide the development of new initiatives that support sustainability. Raise internal and external awareness of existing and developing sustainability initiatives.

  • Provide expertise and recommendations on sustainability best practices and policies to directors and staff of the various Unity College units/departments, and advise the EVP and Senior Staff on institution-wide sustainability. Aid in implementation and develop related educational materials as needed. Provide support to students, faculty, and staff for the development of course content, academic projects, and experiential opportunities related to sustainability.
  • Supervise Sustainability Office staff and serve as operational back-up for staff and their functions as needed.
  • Liaise with sustainability coordinators or equivalents at other education institutions, businesses, governments, and the community to share experience and practices, and promote collaboration.
  • Manage the collection, synthesis, and dissemination of data on energy use, greenhouse gas emissions and other sustainability indicators.
  • Compile, disseminate, and report on sustainability commitments and obligations, such as the ACUPCC (American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment), AASHE’s STARS, and the College’s Return-on-Investment Green Challenge Fund commitment.
  • Promote Unity College sustainability activities through networks, blogs, and community service
  • Work with College Marketing and Development teams to promote coverage of sustainability at Unity College and serve as the primary contact for media on sustainability issues. Produce internal and external sustainability communications.
  • Identify grants, funding, and rebates for sustainability initiatives. Work cooperatively with College Development to apply and follow-up on grants and other funding
  • Advise building and planning projects. Provide input on sustainable building and design during the design and planning process, review plans and recommend methods to integrate green design principles and building practices for all new construction and renovations on campus.
  • Supervise sustainability work-study students on work crews and details. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the institution’s policies and procedures, laws and regulations.
  • Support the College in the endeavor to be a widely recognized for sustainability efforts.
  • Prepare and manage the office budget for areas of responsibility.
  • Contribute to the college’s commitment to safety by using safe work habits, using ergonomics and proper lifting and biohazard protocol as appropriate. Assist other leaders in managing workplace safety.
  • Assume responsibility to maintain and upgrade professional knowledge and skills with regulations, industry trends, current practices, new developments, and applicable laws; Remain up-to-date with the rapidly changing sustainability field through publications, professional organizations, and networks.
  • Serve as a role model for the college’s standards of conduct
  • Demonstrate a high degree of commitment to customer service and quality education
  • Serve as a member of Senior Staff
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Job Requirements:Advanced degree in sustainability, environmental policy or a related field, or satisfactory prior experience in sustainability; experience in and understanding of the field of environmental studies; training in energy and climate emissions accounting preferred.
