Data Strategy – Waste 2 Resources
Position Objective: The objective of this position is to assist the Waste 2 Resources (W2R) program in implementing elements of a new data strategy and the measuring progress section of the state solid and hazardous waste plan.
Qualifications: A student enrolled at TESC for the Spring 2015 quarter, with statistics, mathematics, science, business, marketing or economics background, data compilation, analysis and statistics skills, and an interest in environmental issues, reuse and recycling.
Knowledge, skills, or abilities will be demonstrated by:
- College-level classes in statistics, mathematics, environmental sciences, business, marketing or economics.
- Work experience in statistics, modeling, environmental or economic analysis, marketing or graphics.
- Technical papers or reports on statistics, marketing, environmental science or economics topics.
Other requirements include:
- Ability to communicate clearly verbally and in writing in English.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective work methods and schedules.
Duties: The intern will research, develop, and implement creative visual displays of data for W2R websites and publications, assist with updating and developing new Progress Report indicators, develop W2R data for the government open data platform (data.wa.gov), assist with collecting and compiling recycling data, and other duties.
The intern will work at the Department of Ecology headquarters building in Lacey, WA under the supervision of the Ecology project manager. A cubicle, computer, and necessary software and access privileges will be provided.
Educational Objectives:
- Learn about the collection, analysis, display and use of data and information related to solid and hazardous waste, recycling, toxics in products, and product stewardship.
- Develop skills in creating informative and impactful displays of data.
- Become familiar with waste and materials reporting and tracking issues.
- Learn about government “open data”, how to use it and facilitate its use.
- Experience working with a team of environmental professionals to accomplish a mission.
Expected Schedule: Work will be conducted during Spring Quarter 2015.
- The position begins on April 6, 2015.
- The position ends on June 15, 2015.
Compensation: Not a paid position. Four credits will be provided for the quarter for 20+ hours per week.
