Cleanup Project Technician – Salem, OR

DEQ’s Western Region encompasses 12 counties (Benton, Coos, Curry, Douglas, Jackson, Josephine, Lane, Lincoln, Linn, Marion, Polk and Yamhill) and has regional offices in Coos Bay, Eugene, Medford and Salem.  Western Region staff issue permits regulating water discharges, air emissions and hazardous and solid waste disposal.  They also conduct a range of activities to clean up and protect Oregon’s environment and support community involvement in environmental protection.

 

Western Region’s Environmental Cleanup section is recruiting for one permanent, full-time Natural Resource Specialist 2.  The person in this Cleanup Project Technician position will provide technical assistance to the Western Region Environmental Cleanup Program manager and staff, and serve as project coordinator on simple cleanup sites.  This position also serves as the state-wide Leaking Underground Storage Tank (LUST) program duty officer, conducts complaint investigations and assists with operation and storage of the DEQ Power Probe.

 

The main duties for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Collecting soil, water, air, and sediment samples, measuring groundwater levels and performing other field work as necessary.
  • Providing agency oversight of field activities conducted by independent environmental consultants and contractors.
  • Assisting in the evaluation and/or preparation of work plans, reports and results of site investigations and remedial actions.
  • Coordinating with laboratories on soil and groundwater sampling and analysis issues.
  • Reviewing, analyzing, developing and/or approving scope of work and technical reports for simple site cleanups(e.g., sites with soil contamination but no significant water or air contamination).
  • Answering general technical questions about sites contaminated with hazardous substances.
  • Investigating and responding to complaints from the public involving hazardous substances and cleanup program-related issues.
  • Scheduling the use of the DEQ Power Probe.
  • Performing or contracting out Power Probe equipment maintenance as needed.
