Natural Resource Scientist 1
(Fulltime, Nonpermanent)
The Department of Fish and Wildlife is recruiting to fill one full time, nonpermanent, Natural Resource Scientist
1 position located in the Habitat, Science Division. The duty station for this position is located in the Natural
Resource Building, Olympia, Thurston County.
Under technical direction from the Nearshore and Forage Fish Research Scientist, the Natural Resource
Scientist 1 will assist/lead in project formulation to monitor shoreline restoration projects around Puget Sound
to help better understand the effects of these projects and provide a means of comparison across projects by
using consistent monitoring techniques across multiple projects.
This position and project contributes to the agency’s mission to preserve, protect and perpetuate fish, wildlife
and ecosystems while providing sustainable fish and wildlife recreational and commercial opportunities and its
strategic plan to support healthy ecosystems and maximize the impact of limited resources by supporting
efforts to protect and restore critical habitats and supporting healthy ecosystems. The project is designed to
gather information that can be used by resource and grant managers to better understand the results of
shoreline restoration projects and make more informed decisions about restoration actions.
DUTIES:
Planning, designing, and implementing a monitoring plan to collect consistent information from restoration
projects both before and after restoration activities.
Plans, designs, conducts, and manages monitoring of marine shoreline restoration projects.

Oversees up to 2 employees and multiple vulunteers engaged in data collection for monitoring.
Coordinating and collaborating with restoration and research partners to ensure quality of data, and to facilitate
exchange of information and resources.
Collaborates with project partners to develop monitoring plans that result in the collection of comparable
data across multiple project sites.
Coordinates with project partners to ensure that they have access to tools and information needed to
complete surveys.
Gathers and distributes data with project partners as needed.
Organization, analysis, and reporting of the results of the monitoring surveys.
· Preforms data entry and data QA/QC as data is collected
· Maintains and organizes project data
· Analyzes and reports results of monitoring surveys.
QUALIFICATIONS:
A Bachelor’s degree with major study in a natural or environmental science.
AND
Two years work experience in natural or environmental sciences.
A Master’s degree in the specific specialty field will substitute for the experience.
A Valid driver’s license.
Motor Boat Operator Certification Course, or equivalent certification.
Ability to hike, bend, squat, crawl, and carry up to 50 lbs. over difficult terrain.
Job knowledge
Knowledge of environmental survey methods
Proficient with MS Office tools
Proficient with ArcMap
Understanding of sampling design and practical experience in developing and implementing field
research projects.
Other skills and abilities
Ability to identify and focus on key information needs pertaining to restoration monitoring
Possesses well-developed interpersonal skills needed to successfully lead a small group of technicians
and volunteers to conduct field work and coordinate with project partners.
Proficient with land survey methods such as precise elevation measurements relative to a permanent
benchmark.
Possesses a working knowledge of beach process.
Preferred/Desired Qualifications:
Experience collecting and identifying fish embryos or other small organisms using a microscope.
Excellent organizational and planning skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Knowledge and ability to safely operate small craft in marine waters during inclement conditions, as well
as vehicles to transport boats.
Knowledge of general laboratory safety procedures.
Ability to closely follow standard protocols and perform work under moderate to low supervision.
Ability to effectively instruct others follow standard protocols.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:
Work will be performed in office, laboratory, and field settings. Office working conditions are those commonly
found in government office environments including extended work with personal computers. Collecting data
under adverse environmental conditions is required. Field work will include traveling in small boats to survey
sites and working over uneven or muddy terrain with frequent bending, stooping, and climbing in and out of

boats and carrying equipment and samples weighing up to 50 lbs. Lab work will include use of hazardous
chemicals such as formalin and ethanol, and use of a microscope for extended periods of time. Typical work
schedule will be Monday – Friday 8 hrs/day, 40 hrs/week. Field work will require alternative work schedules;
including work outside of regular work hours and weekends, and work hours over 8 hours in a day. A flexible
work schedule will be considered at the incumbent’s request, subject to supervisory approval. Multi-day,
overnight travel may be required to efficiently conduct data collection tasks and/or supervise field staff. Travel
requirements include travel throughout the Puget Sound region.
Union
This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the State of Washington, Department of
Fish & Wildlife, and the Washington Association of Fish and Wildlife Professionals (WAFWP). As a condition
