Job Summary:
The Sustainability Office at the University of Utah seeks a Communication & Outreach Coordinator to join its team. The Sustainability Office promotes the integration of sustainability principles and ideas into university operations, curriculum and research, and works to increase campus engagement by connecting students, faculty, and staff with initiatives that promote a culture of environmental and social sustainability.

The Communication & Outreach Coordinator will support this mission by acting as a resource to faculty and staff within the Sustainability Office and coordinating internal and external communications and other public outreach efforts.

Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include: managing social media efforts, organizing engagement and outreach events, preparing reports, maintaining and updating websites, coordinating with other communication staff across the campus, and developing plans for improved outreach. Ability to design brochures and graphic elements is a plus. The coordinator reports directly to the Deputy Chief Sustainability Officer.

  • Support efforts and initiatives by Sustainability staff and faculty through outreach efforts, including web maintenance and updates, social media, presentations and other in-person communications, and reports;
  • Develop/implement plan to improve SEO and user experience;
  • Develop, edit and proofread, and update Sustainability outreach materials, including reports, brochures, press releases, and other announcements;
  • Promote existing Sustainability programs to increase awareness and build participation;
  • Assist in event planning and promotion;
  • Manage and edit stories for the Sustainability Resource Center’s blog, and build partnerships to increase coverage of campus;
  • Manage communication-focused student interns;
  • Promote, track, and coordinate sustainability-related events on campus created by other departments;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Communication or a related field plus one year directly related experience or equivalency required. Demonstrated ability to work independently, analyze and make decisions related to program content. Strong coordination and organizational skills required to prioritize conflicting deadlines. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.

Preferences:
Strong written and interpersonal skills. Knowledge of communication principles, strategies, and ideal practices, as well as foundations in sustainability and community engagement. Basic knowledge of web publishing and graphic design.

Background with SEO strategies, basic HTML, Adobe Suite or similar graphic design programs, and photography and photo editing a plus.
