The Chugach National Forest (CNF) will soon be advertising a permanent full-time GS-0401-09 GIS Specialist position for the Supervisors Office located in Anchorage, Alaska.

 

This position serves as one of a team of three geographic information specialists that provide forest-wide service.  The incumbent is responsible for supporting managers and resource specialists in the use of geospatial technology for land, natural resourcs and ecosystem management.

 

Brief Description of Duties:

This position assists with the maintenance of the Forest’s spatial and tabular databases and associated national applications. The incumbent will work with resource specialists to update databases, ensure regional and national data standards are met, ensure data accuracy, resolve errors and update metadata.   Duties will also include manipulating and analyzing geospatial data to support management decisions, planning, and monitoring activities; compile data to create maps for resource programs, planning documents, management alternatives and other projects; provide informal GIS training and technical support to resource specialists and local GIS users; respond to Regional and National information requests; and provide GIS support for Forest Plan Revision. Experience with ArcSDE, Spatial Analyst, Model Builder, LiDAR, ArcPad, Trimble GPS, Pathfinder Office, ERDAS Imagine, eCogniton, ArcGIS Online, PL/SQL, and Python is a plus.

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:  Those who are interested must meet the qualification requirements for the GS-0401 series. Administrative and Management Standards are identified in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook. Duty Location:  The Supervisor’s Office is located in downtown Anchorage, Alaska.  The Chugach National Forest Supervisor’s Office, State and Private Forestry and the PNW Forestry Sciences Laboratory are co-located in a historical newly renovated office in downtown Anchorage (Ship Creek).  Chugach National Forest is the northern most National Forest in the system at more than 5.3 million acres. Recreation, Minerals, Fish, Wildlife management and Recreational Cabins & Trails are found in abundance in back country settings and are the most significant elements of a diverse Forest program of work.
