Range and Training Land Assessment Coordinator (Monitoring Biologist)

Overview:

Engineering and Environment, Inc. is seeking a candidate to fill a full-time year-round position as the Range and Training Land Assessment Coordinator at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM), WA. The individual in this position is responsible for assessing and recording the condition of various aspects of the natural resources and training infrastructure supporting military training mission requirements. JBLM is an approximately 92,000-acre Military reservation located southwest of Tacoma in the Puget Sound region.

The Range and Training Land Assessment Coordinator oversees many components of the Integrated Training Area Management (ITAM) program. The ITAM program is the Army’s comprehensive approach to sustainable training land management. ITAM is based on the integration of military mission, natural resource stewardship, and environmental compliance.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement protocols, procedures, and methodologies for gathering data and information on natural resources. Emphasis will be placed on:

o Grassland vegetation identification and management

o Research on re-establishing native vegetation after training impacts

o Surveying and quantifying the condition of primitive roads

  • Identify, calculate, record, and report cover of PNW flora in grasslands and forests
  • Identify and recommend priorities for land repair
  • Manage and manipulate GIS data and produce maps using ESRI software
  • Work regularly with Trimble GPS equipment and ArcPad
  • Use appropriate statistical methods to analyze data
  • Manage current databases as well as archival data
  • Manage a crew of 1-4 seasonal field technicians

o Provide training and oversight on a daily basis during the field season (Apr.-Oct.)

  • Coordinate actions between RTLA projects and entities on/off JBLM
  • Produce technical reports
  • Conduct presentations
  • Communicate regularly with ITAM Coordinator, and other military/non-military personnel

 

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have technical field data collection skills as well as a strong familiarity with ESRI GIS software and database management/organization. Additionally the ideal candidate will be a motivated self-starter who enjoys solving problems and working both in the field and the office. Experience with developing and prioritizing projects, conducting field surveys and statistical data analyses, and supervising field crew are highly desired. Candidates should have strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.

A Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s or PhD. Preferred) from an accredited college/university in natural resource management, restoration ecology, conservation biology, botany, or related field with 2 years relevant experience required. The candidate will have the knowledge or willingness to learn about training land management, and military readiness/culture.

Must hold a valid driver’s license.

Must be capable of obtaining a security clearance.
