Curriculum for the Bioregion, an Initiative of the Washington Center

Inquiring into an Ethic of Place

A Workshop on Place-Based Learning

Saturday, January 30, 2016 at The Evergreen State College – Tacoma

How are our students considering and connecting to place in our classes?  How might investigating values and ways of life of our bioregion, our home place, enhance our learning and teaching about sustainability as we take up the environmental and social issues facing humanity in the 21st century?  This workshop will explore these questions and the ways they apply to various disciplines and perspectives, providing an opportunity for us to share what we’re doing—or considering doing—with our students.  This one-day gathering will include discussions of key readings, examples of place-based learning projects in this bioregion—especially ones in urban contexts—as well as time for discussion and curriculum planning in small groups and campus-teams.

Workshop facilitators:   Leaders:  Jane Compson, University of Washington Tacoma, Mike Gillespie, Emeritus University of Nebraska, Kevin O’Brien, Pacific Lutheran University, and Jean MacGregor, Director of Curriculum for the Bioregion.

Workshop particulars: The workshop will run will run from 9:00 a.m. to about 4:00 p.m.  Registration and  a continental breakfast will open at 8:30 a.m.  Some pre-reading will be essential for a full start on the workshop day.  We invite faculty to attend in teams; individuals and students are also most welcome to attend.  The registration fee for the day (including refreshments, lunch, and resource materials) is $60/person for individuals, $50/person for two or more faculty planning to attend as a team, and $45 for students. Registration forms and information are on the next pages.  Space is limited, so please register promptly; after January 20th, please contact us to see if there is still space in the workshop.
