Purpose/ Summary: The Volunteer Talent Manager is responsible for creating a robust Volunteer Corps and a wide breadth of volunteer programs and positions that support Pacific Science Center’s mission. The Manager works across departments to understand where volunteers are needed and in what capacity; advise the organization on how to use volunteers most effectively, train volunteer coordinators, be a resource on best practices in volunteer management, and serve as a liaison to our science center volunteer community.

The position uses marketing and outreach and acts as a brand ambassador with external organizations and corporations to foster engagement with us and to build community interest in volunteering at the science center. It works to identify, recruit, develop, schedule and evaluate volunteers and ensure volunteer programs strategically extend the reach of Pacific Science Center’s employees and programs. The manager develops, implements, and assesses volunteer programs strategically in the context of the Science Center’s evolving needs.

Supervisory Responsibilities: The Volunteer Talent Manager is responsible for management of the Volunteer Program, supervises Volunteer Program Interns, and works closely with Staff Volunteer Supervisors to provide support.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Assess organizational needs and develop new volunteer opportunities
  2. Recruit, onboard, and support a wide array of volunteers with diverse skills, abilities, and demographics
  3. Leverage our stature in the community and our focus on STEM to motivate external partners to engage with us in their community building endeavors
  4. Ensure volunteer programs have the necessary structure and materials from applications to processes to record keeping
  5. Support staff in their deployment of volunteers; advise and coach staff in volunteer management and relations
  6. Build strategic relationships; participate in existing opportunities and develop new opportunities that bring volunteers to us in structured and systemic ways
  7. Foster a sense of community and ambassadorship amongst Volunteer Corps through regular social and learning opportunities, both informal and formal
  8. Develop Volunteer Program marketing materials (web, print or digital) consistent with the Science Center brand
  9. Adhere to the volunteer program budget while maintaining volunteer staffing, relations, and programs
  10. Research, coordinate, evaluate, report on and communicate the value of all volunteer programs throughout Pacific Science Center to ensure robust unified volunteer programs and Volunteer Corps

Position Requirements: Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Principles and practices of all functional areas of volunteer management and leadership principles, including recruiting, on-boarding, recognition, performance management, program evaluation, and risk management
  • Best practices and trends in volunteer management
  • Puget Sound area resources for potential volunteers including events, partnerships and entities that foster community building and STEM education

Skills:

  • Strong computer usage skills in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including active listening and empathy
  • Exceptional communication skills, both oral and written
  • Demonstrated strategic thinking skills for continuous improvement
  • Effective utilization of Volgistics or other volunteer database system for reporting and tracking of program goals

Ability to:

  • Design, develop, administer and evaluate programs in all functional areas of volunteer management
  • Track and analyze trends and best practices to contribute to continuous improvement of volunteer program
  • Promote collaboration across departments
  • Work effectively and productively to attract and engage with a diverse volunteer and employee base
  • Be a mission oriented ambassador for the Pacific Science Center and Volunteer Corps
