Summary: Interpretive Science Educators create a positive and memorable experience for guests by sharing hands-on and engaging educational activities with large and small groups as well as individual guests. The educators interpret exhibits and scientific concepts by creating opportunities for guest discovery and guide the guest experience with discussion and exploration, with the goal of inspiring a lifelong interest in science, math and technology.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  1. Set the tone for a positive guest experience: welcome each guest, determine if they would like any assistance, provide them information to guide their experience.
  2. Engage with guests on an individual level: inspire an interest in science and technology through discussion and interpretation of exhibits and through hands-on interactive activities. Ensure all content shared with guests is scientifically accurate.
  3. Value guests and make them feel important: take time to answer questions, guide exploration of activities and exhibits. Actively seek guest participation.
  4. Possess baseline content and interpretive competency: be able to interpret basic scientific concepts such as motion or DNA, as well as integrative and current science topics such as climate change or alternative energy.
  5. Deliver integrated, consistent experiences to guests
  6. Promote safety and security and protect assets
  7. Provide mentorship to incoming staff, Discovery Corps members and volunteers
  8. Staff exhibits for special events and facility rentals

Position Requirements: Knowledge, Education, Skills, Experience, Abilities:

  1. Ability to engage with guests of all ages and from diverse backgrounds and an interest in guest engagement.
  2. Demonstrated enthusiasm for science and education.
  3. Content knowledge and interest in basic and integrative sciences and an ability to communicate effectively and accurately about these topics.
  4. In pursuit of a college degree in science, education or related field or 3 years of equivalent work experience.
  5. Experience working in education, communication and/or customer service.
  6. College degree in science, education or related field is strongly preferred.

Enhance Guest Experience—Ensure guests are welcomed and served in a manner that makes their visit positive, memorable and consistent with Pacific Science Center’s mission, vision, and values. Assist guests in maximizing their visit to Pacific Science Center. Be approachable and look for opportunities to enhance the guests’ experience. Enrich the guest experience by offering information about programs, theaters, membership, website and social media.

Guest Engagement—Be an ambassador of Pacific Science Center. Anticipate and exceed guests’ expectations. Greet, welcome and assist guests throughout their visit. Engage guests in an array of activities including exhibits, shows and interpretation. Show guests appreciation, promote continued engagement and invite them to return.

STEM Literacy—Have knowledge of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) principles and processes with respect to Pacific Science Center’s exhibits and programs. Continuously seek the latest understanding of science discovery and the natural world.

Inspiring—Assist guests in appreciating the relevance of science exhibited at Pacific Science Center and in their daily lives. Appreciate Guests for their interest and support of science in a city with many other institutions and programs. Inspire guests through personal stories of science exploration. Invite Guests to share stories, observances and ideas.
