Position Description
Farm Caretaker
Start Date: April 1, 2016
Variable hours: 20-30 hours per week, including some evenings and weekends
Term: This is a 6 month, temporary position ending September 30, 2016
Compensation: Hourly rate of $11.00/hour.
Supervision: Position reports to the Executive Director
The Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group (HCSEG) is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization that strives to connect landscape, citizens, visitors, and wildlife through collaborative salmon restoration activities, and sustainable agricultural practices at the Salmon Center and throughout the Hood Canal Watershed. Position Summary: The Farm Caretaker supports HCSEG’s mission by making the Salmon Center buildings, open space and livestock enclosures inviting and desirable places for the public. The position is responsible for daily farm animal care and maintenance, grounds and infrastructure maintenance and preparation for special events and activities. The Farm Caretaker will work with the Executive Director to facilitate activities on our 38 acre certified organic farm and space that is open to the public so that the space promotes HCSEG’s mission and goals. The Farm Caretaker will also work with the environmental education staff to engage communities in educational activities here at the Salmon Center.
Typical Duties Include:
 Care and daily maintenance of the animals on the farm;
 Order and purchase food and supplies for animal care;
 Leading corrections center crews on grounds maintenance, janitorial and other tasks;
 Carrying out NRCS EQIP contract project requirements;
 Coordinate and carry out vehicle maintenance;
 Participate in HCSEG Safety Committee meeting once monthly;
 Follow through with correcting Safety Committee findings;
 Infrastructure maintenance and janitorial service;
 Daily monitoring and periodic/seasonal maintenance of the Union River Preserve trail system;
 Preparation of invoices and reports for Executive Director review;
 Perform field work as needed to support research and restoration staff;
 Work with Sustainability Coordinators to complete seasonal farm and garden projects;
 Work with volunteers to complete special projects;
 Perform tasks needed to support education staff;
 Other tasks as needed.

Qualifications:
1. Minimum education: High School Diploma or GED
2. Strong team leader with proven ability to motivate others
3. General knowledge of and skills required for building maintenance
4. Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities
5. Organized, self-motivated and strong attention to detail
6. Diplomatic problem solving skills
7. Good natured team player, comfortable working with diverse groups of people
8. Familiarity with Microsoft Office programs
9. Experience working with youth and adults in an educational setting
10. Ability to perform physical labor in all weather conditions including moving hay bales, planting trees, wading through moving water and lifting up to 50 lbs.
11. Access to personal vehicle and ability to travel and work evenings and weekends (reimbursed for mileage at the current WA State rate)
12. Safe driving record
13. Ability to pass a Washington State Patrol background check
