ROLE OVERVIEW
The Sustainability Specialist will serve directly with the Sustainability Manager to increase environmental awareness and positive behavior change through community outreach, education and staff engagement with the goal of reducing environmental impacts. The member will help achieve this goal through direct environmental education and outreach.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Outreach:
 Lead planning committee for South Sound Sustainability Expo and two Northwest Earth Institute courses
 Serve collaboratively with other organizations and stakeholders on joint sustainability outreach events and opportunities
 Work with Healthy Homes, Healthy Neighborhoods to engage residents in underserved communities and assist in carrying out programming
 Develop presentations and deliver to schools, businesses, Neighborhood Councils, active transportation networks, and non-profits
 Use existing and develop new tracking and reporting tools and methods, including quarterly success stories and annual sustainability accomplishments
 Engage with and inform the public on sustainability events and initiatives through website management and social media, namely the Tacoma Sustainability Facebook page
 Manage the City’s Green Events Program by conducting outreach to and leading meetings with community organizations
Reduce resource consumption:
 Monitor and track fuel, energy and paper use data for 2000 employees
 Research and develop policies, programs and education tools to facilitate reduction
Recruit and manage volunteers and interns for events and activities

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
 Age 18 to 25
 College graduate
 Ability to multitask and manage multiple priorities and deadlines
 Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
 Ability to work well independently and as part of a team
 Excellent verbal and written communication skills
 Knowledge of and passion for environmental issues
 Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office
 Availability for occasional evenings and weekends
 Ability to walk or bike to office (nearest bus stop is 1 mile away)
PREFERRED:
 Knowledge of Tacoma area and community
 Experience in event planning
 Some experience biking and walking for transportation
COMPENSATION:
 Monthly stipend of $1,195
 Education award of $5,775 upon completion of service
