Fish and Wildlife Biologist 2

The Department of Fish and Wildlife is recruiting to fill one full time non-permanent Fish & Wildlife Biologist 2 position located in the Habitat Program, Fish Passage and Screening Division. The duty station will be located at, 325 N. 13th Avenue, Walla Walla, 99362 in the USDA office building. The position is funded from July 1, 2016 through June 30, 2017, possibly September 30, 2017.The successful applicant will be highly motivated to protect and promote salmonid populations and consider projects from a fish-first point of view. This person will have expert knowledge of Washington State and federal fish screening criteria. The incumbent will have a strong understanding of Natural Resources Conservation Service restoration programs and eligibility criteria. The incumbent manages a diverse workload and operates independently while providing the supervisor with concise summaries of current work on a regular basis. The incumbent will work directly with private landowners and attend internal and external meetings related to projects as necessary and will consistently strive to promote the importance of fish screening. The position directly supports the agency’s mission of preserving and protecting native species and the ecosystem they depend upon and our Conservation Initiative mission. This position will be responsible for a variety of tasks, which depend on the incumbent’s ability to learn and understand state and federal fish screening criteria and apply it in the form of technical assistance for project development. The supervisor will assist the selected candidate in becoming familiar with the necessary technical information but familiarity with the relevant material is expected. In addition to providing fish screening technical assistance, this position identifies new fish screening projects and works with WDFW and external entities to identify cost share opportunities. This position will identify necessary fish screening and passage projects on WDFW lands in tributaries to the Snake and Columbia rivers and their tributaries. This position will assist the supervisor in pursuing funding to carry out fish screening activities. This position interacts with other WDFW employees; state, federal, and local governments; tribes; conservation districts; fisheries enhancement groups; private citizens; and other external entities. Additional tasks will be assigned by the supervisor as appropriate. This position Public outreach to promote fish screening and passage will be an essential mindset for the successful applicant.
