I would like to announce a new peer-reviewed journal of the University of California Press, Case Studies in the Environment (CSE). CSE was launched in recognition of the important pedagogical role that case studies can play in environmental studies and science classrooms, including fostering student critical thinking skills, knowledge acquisition, and active learning. The fostering of effective integrative learning experiences in the classroom through strategies such as case studies has been widely identified in recent studies as an essential learning outcome.

CSE seeks to provide a forum for environmental practitioners and scholars to share case studies suitable for use in classrooms or by professionals, as well as critical pedagogy in this field, including ways to optimize the use of case studies and assess learning results. Moreover, CSE will help to facilitate in-class use of case studies through contributions of lecture slides and teacher notes.

Organized around a comprehensive collection of cases within six domains: Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation; Ecology and Biodiversity Conservation; Environmental Law, Policy and Management, Sustainability, Energy and the Environment, and Water Science and Technology..

Our editorial team currently includes Editor-in-Chief Wil Burns; Ecology and Biodiversity Conservation section editors Martha Groom, Tuyeni Mwampamba, and Cynthia Wei; Environmental Law, Policy and Management section editor Kate O’Neill; Iara Lacher and Luca Tacconi as Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation section editors, Dustin Mulvaney and Maria Petrova as Energy and the Environment section editors, and Lyuba Zarsky as one of our Sustainability section editors. .

Through 2017, all content in the journal will be available free for researchers, teaching faculty, students, professionals, and policymakers who want to better understand environmental practice.

In the interim, we encourage you to:

  • Sign up for periodic email alerts on new course content and other journal announcements;

Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have ideas for contributions to the journal, or have other questions.
