The Department of Fish and Wildlife is recruiting to fill three (3) full time, nonpermanent, Fish & Wildlife Biologist 1 positions located in the Habitat Program, Region 2. The duty station for this position is located at 206 Glover St. Twisp, WA, Okanogan County.  The position duration is approximately 8 months, with an anticipated start date of April 10, 2017.  These are non-permanent field biologist positions working on the Methow Beaver Project.

Under the supervision of the Senior Biologist (F&W Biologist 3), these positions conduct duties associated with the Beaver Project. The project goal is the enhancement/restoration of riparian habitats and water quality by translocation of nuisance beavers to suitable unoccupied habitat to create new wetlands.  This endeavor will address WDFW’s objectives of maintaining healthy, diverse fish and wildlife populations and providing sustainable wildlife-based recreational opportunities.

The incumbents will perform duties that include beaver capture/care/release, stream parameter monitoring, wetland monitoring, data compilation and analysis, and report writing.
Duties

Assists in conducting professional scientific studies and provides analysis and assessment of data collected to provide impacts or determine analysis that may lead to change of agency goals or mission objectives and/or provide other factors on fish and wildlife conservation, habitat or land use:

Inventory, assessment, and monitoring data collection

  • Conduct advanced on-site evaluations of beaver habitats; conduct activities associated with the capture, care and release of wild beavers; successfully establish and monitor beavers at previously unoccupied sites.Habitat surveys and Writing summaries
  • Independently plan, organize and conduct physical habitat evaluations of beaver habitats; evaluate habitat quality to develop priority index values for beaver habitat correction;
  • organize and prepare summaries of data for use in the development of recommendations for habitat enhancements to benefit beaver recovery and sustainability;  Deploying stream parameter monitoring equipment, then download and organize collected data in computer spread sheets; analyze and write up collected field data; assist with the production of project reports and publications.

Data entry and usage of GIS mapping software

  • Process physical and biological habitat data, using established data conversion and statistical procedures, in Excel spreadsheets and Access databases; use GIS software (ArcView) for creating maps of features and habitat assessment sites; use ArcView for calculations relating to the analysis of habitat data; train and assist coworkers in data manipulation and management using GIS, Excel spreadsheets and Access databases.
