Integrated Training Area Management Program is seeking candidates to fill positions as Seasonal Field Technicians for the Range and Training Lands Assessment (RTLA) program on Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. RTLA Technicians work with the RTLA Coordinator to assess the condition of rare South Puget Sound prairies and oak savannas. Work consists primarily of vegetation assessments on JBLM prairies and oak savannas.

RTLA Technicians work as contractors for MBO Partners. Work schedule is four ten-hour days, Monday-Thursday. The season is expected to run from March through mid-August 2017, with the possibility for extension into the fall. Ability to take time off will be extremely limited during the first four months of the field season.

Responsibilities: 

  • Collects and organizes scientific data on vegetation (species and cover), land condition, maneuver damage, repair efforts, threatened and endangered species
  • Learns and implements methods for multiple projects including vegetation mapping, maneuver trail inventory and assessment, monitoring of native plugs, seed, brush removal, and noxious weeds
  • Assists in wild-seed collection, spring and fall plantings of native species, and greenhouse duties

Requirements:

  • Desirable qualifications include a four-year college degree with a focus in environmental science or a related field and one year of experience conducting field work
  • Field technicians must be able to proficiently identify native and non-native plant species including grasses
  • Prior experience with ArcGIS software and operation of Trimble GPS units desirable
  • Evidence of experience working with a small crew, and excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Work requires long periods of walking more than 10 miles/day over rough terrain; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, reaching, lifting of moderately heavy items
  • Work involves exposure to moderate risks and discomforts, such as those due to adverse weather conditions, unexploded ordnance, wild animals, and requires special safety precautions and/or protective clothing and equipment at times
  • Driver’s license
  • Must pass background check (D.O.D. clearance)

Compensation: Crew members will be paid $14.39-19.48 per hour, depending on activity. Benefits will be provided in the form of a $4.27 per hour income supplement.
