Job Description:
The Washington Recreation and Conservation Office (RCO) has an exciting
internship opportunity with the Washington Invasive Species Council
(WISC), assisting implementation of the council’s strategic plan and
projects.
The Recreation and Conservation Office (RCO) is a small state agency that
supports five boards and councils in work that creates and maintains
opportunities for recreation, protects the best of the state’s wild lands, and
contributes to the state’s efforts to recover salmon from the brink of
extinction. The RCO is a great place to work where employees are
passionate about protecting our environment, restoring salmon runs and
creating recreational opportunities for the citizens of Washington.
The Washington Invasive Species Council (WISC) is housed within RCO and
was established by the Legislature in 2006. The WISC’s role is to coordinate
and maintain a statewide invasive species strategy; to provide policy level
direction, planning, and coordination for combatting harmful invasive
species throughout the state and preventing the introduction of others that
may be potentially harmful.
This position will assist the WISC Executive Coordinator, RCO staff, and
WISC members to implement the council’s strategic plan and projects. Other
duties as assigned. The position duties will involve research, development
and implementation of invasive species policy, educational curriculum and
tools, writing reports, and conveying invasive species issues to the public
and partners of the council. The position may occasionally involve day or
overnight travel within Washington State, not to exceed 2 nights per
semester.
Qualifications:
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
•Applicant must be currently enrolled as a student at an accredited
university, have completed at least one year of coursework at any college or
university and will be continuing education during the duration of the
position.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
•Basic knowledge of ecology, biology, geography, and/or political science,
•Basic knowledge of invasive species/noxious weed species, management
principles, and policy issues,
•Basic knowledge of education and outreach principles,
•Ability to communicate effectively in writing and in-person,
•Ability to work both independently and as part of a team,
•Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office and Adobe,
•Basic ArcGIS and ArcGIS Online skills, and
•Familiarity with mobile devices, mobile data collection and entry
knowledge/work experience.
SPECIAL NOTE
•This position does not receive benefits and is expected to last
approximately one year.
•Applicants must have a valid Washington State driver’s license.
•The RCO may hire only those who are legally authorized to work in the
United States.
