SUMMARY:

The Director of Sustainability is a visionary leader and organizational strategist for sustainability activities at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. This individual works collaboratively with all campus stakeholders to plan, develop, and implement projects, encouraging the optimal use of all societal capitals – natural, built, financial, social, and human. The Director of Sustainability oversees a comprehensive, campus-wide sustainability initiative by coordinating planning, academia, operations, research, community development, and student activities to foster a culture of sustainability on campus. This position reports to the Director of the Finger Lakes Institute.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Direct planning and programming to improve the sustainability of campus operations across the spectrum of energy, waste, water, food, transportation, buildings, purchasing, grounds, etc.
  • Manage and facilitate a strategic planning process that establishes a clear plan, with short and long-term goals, for the administration and governance of all aspects of sustainability at HWS.
  • Coordinate, support, and expand opportunities for the academic community to integrate sustainability into courses, research, internships, and projects.
  • Research, propose, and support the adoption of new campus sustainability mechanisms.
  • Lead the Climate Task Force, in partnership with the co-chairs, to develop, implement, and track programs aimed at meeting climate obligations under the Climate Leadership Network’s Carbon Commitment and HWS’s 2025 climate neutrality goal.
  • Complete an updated Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG) Inventory to support energy and climate action planning.
  • Create and implement internal and external communication strategies to promote broad awareness of campus sustainability initiatives by working effectively with Office of Communications and students.
  • Collect and analyze sustainability data for reporting and decision-making purposes.
  • Work with HWS colleagues to identify, seek, and secure external grant funding.
  • Serve as sustainability liaison for HWS with other institutions, businesses, local governments, foundations, and community organizations.
  • Represent HWS sustainability efforts through conferences, committees, and related networks outside the Colleges.
  • Strengthen HWS’s organizational capacity to advance campus and community sustainability through relationship-building and structural advancements.
  • Manage all Office of Sustainability staff and interns, as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least 3 years of experience in sustainability planning and management.
  • Strong interpersonal, professional, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Demonstrated analytical, problem solving, organizational, and leadership abilities.

OTHER INFORMATION:

This is a full-time, 12-month, benefits-eligible administrative salaried/exempt position. Typical hours of work are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with some occasional nights and weekends. The salary is competitive and is negotiable depending on the strength of qualifications. The benefit package includes but is not limited to: 20 days of vacation each year; 10 paid holidays; medical, dental, and vision insurances; long-term disability coverage; life insurance; and retirement benefits. This position is not all-inclusive, as other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned.
