Friends of the Inyo Executive Director Job Description

Friends of the Inyo is devoted to the preservation of the Eastern Sierra landscapes, animals, plants and natural ecosystems. We keep the public lands of the Eastern Sierra public, open to all, and unencumbered by inappropriate development. Our mission is to ensure the public lands of the Eastern Sierra exist in an intact, healthy natural state for present and future generations of people and wildlife.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Friends of the Inyo Executive Director implements long term strategic direction and administers the organizations programs. The Director oversees staff, fundraises, and develops relationships with local partners and agency heads. This full time position is based in Bishop, California and requires frequent travel across the Eastern Sierra, as well as occasional out of area travel.

A key consideration for our next Executive Director is to be able to build Friends of the Inyo into the “go to” organization in the Eastern Sierra, and develop a robust network of partners to help fulfill our mission.

PRIMARY DUTIES:

Administrative

• Work with Board of Directors to establish policies, multi-year strategic focus and annual goals for the organization.

• Ensure the financial health of the organization through fundraising, responsible fiscal management and oversight of grant programs. Develop and manage an annual budget.

• Responsible for the hiring, review, supervision, and discipline of staff, up to and including termination.

• Establish a trustworthy, responsive and open, communicative atmosphere within the organization. Conduct business in a professional manner.

• Maintain a safe, mutually supportive and productive workplace.

Programmatic

• Develop and manage relationships with land management agencies, local governments and regional partners. Identify and pursue strategic partnerships to further the mission of Friends of the Inyo.

• Provide direction to staff on the organizations preservation policy, public lands stewardship program, and general strategic direction.

Fundraising and Communication

• Research, write, review and manage grants and contracts. Develop and maintain a system for records and documentation.

• Oversee and grow a development program employing a variety of revenue streams.

• Work with staff to create and implement an effective communications plan across media platforms to support the goals and projects of the organization.

• Direct outreach programs, presentations, website content, printed material and other media.

Required Skills

• Demonstrated skills in communications using a variety of media.

• Leadership and organizational skills showing the ability to delegate tasks with clear expectations while empowering staff to take ownership of their work.

• Ability to multi-task and manage diverse programs and projects effectively.

• Experience in planning, managing and executing successful fundraising programs from institutions and individuals.

• Experience in financial management of organizations or programs.

Desired Characteristics

• Prior experience as an Executive Director or at a director level supervising staff.

• Energetic, enthusiastic, creative, people-oriented style.

• Familiarity with public lands conservation issues.

• Knowledge of the local, regional and national political landscapes.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary range is $50-55,000./year plus health benefits.
