EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Ocean Sampling Program is recruiting to fill several Nonpermanent Scientific Technician 2 positions. Employment will begin 4-25-2017, 6-1-2017, or later with an approximate duration of 4-5 months. Port Samplers are stationed in ports of Ilwaco, Westport, Neah Bay or LaPush, Washington.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Duties include collection of catch effort and biological data from ocean recreational and commercial troll fisheries through dockside angler interviews and sampling of catches; and upload and reporting of field data on a daily basis to fisheries managers for maintaining in-season quota management goals. Data collection will utilize iPads, electronic forms, and standardized sampling protocols to conduct vessel effort counts, identify and enumerate salmon and other marine fishes, detect coded wire tags in salmon, and collect biological data (lengths, scales, snouts, tissue, etc.). This position also requires communication with the public regarding current recreational and commercial marine fisheries’ state and federal fishing regulations, in-season regulatory actions, and answering other questions in a professional manner as a representative for the agency.

SCHEDULE: Generally 40 hours/week, Monday-Sunday. Weekend and holiday work, occasional overtime, as well as non-consecutive days off required. Shifts are generally 8 hours, but vary with sampling needs and angler effort. Shifts begin as early as 4AM and can end as late as 10PM.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work duties will occur 100% in the field. Sampling will be performed in all types of weather conditions. Staff will work over water and are required to wear a personal flotation device. Applicants should be able to lift up to 40 pounds of weight, and be able to perform sampling activities (walking, kneeling, bending, climbing, and getting in and out of boats) over the course of a full shift.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A high school diploma and two years college education in a natural science; experience as an assistant to a biologist may be substituted year-for-year for college education. Applicants must have access to a vehicle and a driver’s license valid in Washington State. Successful applicants will have good oral communication skills and an understanding of basic data collection; training on specific sampling techniques and fish identification is provided.
