SUMMER PROGRAMS INSTRUCTOR-BRIGHTWATER CENTER

Overview: Whether at our 255-acre outdoor learning center, or any of our off-site locations, IslandWood invites children and adults alike to discover a new way of seeing nature, themselves, and one another. In doing so, each person comes to understand their ability to change the world for the better. IslandWood operates traditional day camp programs for campers 4 years-olds through those entering 9th grade. Running from late June through mid-August, these experiences directly address IslandWood’s mission of inspiring lifelong learning and environmental and community stewardship.

Position Summary: As a Summer Programs Instructor you will be responsible for leading educational programming using a curriculum guide that integrates science, technology, arts, teambuilding, and adventure learning. IslandWood’s Summer Programs serve children entering 1st through 6th grade, and include mentoring teen volunteers for the summer.

Location: Brightwater Center

Reports To: Summer Programs Coordinator-Brightwater Center

Dates: June 20-August 11, 2017

Schedule: M-F: 8:30 AM-4:20 PM (5:00 PM on Fridays)

Responsibilities:

• Develop and teach week-long camp programs for children ages 4-12. These include Summer Day Camp, as well as Voices from the Field.

• Abide by IslandWood’s safety procedures and protocols as stated in your Summer Camp Instructor Handbook and ensure the safety of participants at all times.

• Serve as a mentor to a Summer Programs Intern.

• Participate and lead portions of staff training June 20-23, 2017.

• Attend weekly debrief and prep meetings on Fridays (4:00-5:00 PM).

Please note that your schedule may vary during the summer depending on participant numbers. You may be asked to not come in for a week if low enrollment occurs.

Qualifications:

• Graduate Certificate in Education, Environment & Community

• Current Wilderness First Aid (WFA) Certification & CPR required

• At least two years’ experience in teaching or environmental education

• Ability to work as a collaborative and cooperative team member

• Comfortable working with kids of diverse ages, backgrounds, and developmental stages

• Strong work ethic, punctual, flexible, dependable, and responsible

• Excellent interpersonal skills with staff, campers, and families

• Willingness and ability to work long hours

• Skilled at spreading calm and responding to parent concerns

• Must be at least 21 years old
