JOB TITLE: Ocean Shores Visitor Experiences Program –Beach Education Specialist
CLASSIFICATION: Public Service Representative 2
ANTICIPATED DURATION OF POSITION: Four month duration- Start date preferably May1st.
Start and end dates are flexible.
WORK HOURS/SCHEDULE: 2 consecutive days off- work hours will vary per week.
Weekends, evenings, and holidays with some overnight travel is required.
SALARY: $12.69 hourly, approx. $2,220.00 monthly
LOCATION/JOB SITE: Ocean Shores State Recreation Site- Position is based out of the Central Coast District Office in Seal Rock, Oregon. Regular travel to multiple field locations in the area is required.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
Oregon State Parks is looking for enthusiastic, motivated people to join our Ocean Shores Visitor Experience Program as a Beach Education Specialist. This program focuses on coordinating and providing support for a broad range of programmed activities including interpretation, education, outreach and outdoor recreation that applies to the Ocean Shores State Recreation Area. The program is guided by the agencies goals to providing safe public access, protecting cultural and natural resources, increasing public awareness and education of beach safety for the provision of great visitor experience. As a Beach Education Specialist, you will share your knowledge and enthusiasm with visitors with the guidance provided by the Ocean Shores Core Team.
- Assist with the administration and implementation of visitor-focused presentations on Ocean Shore topics including but not limited to rocky intertidal, outdoor recreation, beach safety, habitat restoration and
- Assist with the environmental education presentations and outreach focused on the threatened Western Snowy Plover (WSP) and its
- Assist with WSP population surveys
- Coordinate and perform informal and formal roving interpretation within park and beach
- Effectively and professionally communicate Oregon State Park goals, messaging and Agency
- Assist with outreach to local recreation groups and communities
- Project assistance related to safe and memorable visitor
- Organizing, maintaining and transporting program supplies and
- Occasional support of and assistance with additional Visitor Experience programs and projects
- Inform visitors of park rules and regulations
- Work with a variety of OPRD office staff, field staff and with park volunteers to ensure consistency in
operational procedures, projects and communication.
- Support staff and volunteers in emergency response to visitor injury
REQUIRED AND PREFERRED SKILLS, EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:
- Educational background in parks, interpretation, environmental education, , outdoor recreation or tourism
- Ability to communicate effectively with visitors through public speaking, listening and
- Experience working in one or more of the following program areas: interpretation, outdoor skills instruction, outdoor recreation, environmental education, partnerships, and special
- Specialized skills in developing and safely leading outdoor recreation presentations such as hiking, tide pooling and
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office products required;
- Experience working in one or more of the following program areas: interpretation, outdoor skills instruction, outdoor recreation, environmental education, partnerships, and special
- Ability to multi-task on a variety of ongoing simultaneous projects. Independence, creativity and resourcefulness are necessary in this

WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Ability to walk/work over rough terrain, up/down inclines, stairs, on paved or unpaved surfaces
- Work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Must comply with Department work rules, safety procedures, dress and grooming standards
- Must be willing to work weekends, holidays and shift
- Applicant must also pass a criminal background check and possess a valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving
ORIENTATION, TRAINING, AND EVALUATION:
Visitor Experience Program Assistants will receive a thorough employee orientation and written position expectations from management or lead workers. Training in interpretive skills, Junior Ranger program, Rocky Shores, Verbal Judo and possibly First Aid/CPR will be provided as appropriate and available.
Project and task-specific training will also be provided as needed as well as on-the-job training and iLearn safety modules to use tools and systems in place. Ongoing coaching and mentoring will be provided by your supervisor and other team members. A final evaluation and exit interview will be provided at the end of the season.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT TO BE USED:
- Varied work environments depending on assigned work locations; must be willing and able to work in a busy, shared office environment and also out-of-doors.
- Computer with e-mail account and access to Internet, phone, audio-visual equipment and other tools provided.
- Operation of a state vehicle expected – may include cars, trucks, all terrain vehicles, possible trailer towing.

*The salary and step included in this offer reflects the base salary. This position is represented by SEIU. Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) eligible SEIU represented employees will have their base salary increased by 6.95% and pay the 6% employee contribution to PERS. If you are not yet PERS eligible, the 6.95% pay increase and employee contribution will be effective upon PERS eligibility.
