Natural Resource Technician 2
The Department of Fish and Wildlife is recruiting one (1) part time, on-call, Natural Resource Technician 2 located in the Wildlife Program, Region 3. This position reports to the Wildlife Conflict Specialist, but works interdependently with other Wildlife Program professionals and Enforcement staff to assist in addressing issues.

Under general direction, this position assists the Wildlife Conflict Specialist in Kittitas and Yakima Counties in responding to, addressing and resolving wildlife conflicts reported by private landowners. Specifically, this position will primarily focus on elk-related agricultural conflicts with a focus on implementing fencing and other non-lethal approaches to mitigate elk damage while assisting the Wildlife Conflict Specialist in the administration of permits which result in the lethal removal of elk.

 Duties:
  • Employ wildlife damage management practices to mitigate human/wildlife conflicts as assigned such as fencing, hazing, herding, trapping, installing signs, applying deterrents and repellants, deploying sound emitting devices, biodeterrents, installing fladry, and monitoring trail cameras. Assist with the preparation, tracking, data entry and coordination of landowner damage prevention agreements and landowner permits.
  • Coordinate with WDFW staff, representatives from other entities, and outside vendors regarding new techniques/technology being utilized to mitigate wildlife damages. Work collaboratively with the Wildlife Conflict Specialist to develop one or more pilot project(s) to test the efficacy of innovative non-lethal wildlife damage mitigation techniques. Obtain product specifications/bids/cost estimates, assist with procurement of equipment and supplies, deploy/install, monitor, and collect/enter/summarize data.
  • Collaborate with other agency employees, partners, and/or volunteers on wildlife damage control issues. Work schedule is 40 hours/week, 5 days/week, and may include evenings and weekends.
 Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or GED, including 1 year of high school science and 1 year of experience as a Natural Resource Technician or Scientific Technician 1 or 2.

A valid Washington or other State Driver’s License
At a minimum, Nationally Accredited Basic First Aid Certification

 Supplemental Information:
Working Conditions
The successful candidate must be willing and able to:

  • Work hours outside of the regular 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday – Friday work hours including evenings and weekends. During peak workloads hours may be long and irregular.
  • Work in all weather conditions including extreme heat or snow and sometimes over difficult terrain and surfaces up to 90% of the time.;
  • Work alone in remote areas;
  • Travel between wildlife areas to complete job tasks. Travel may include daily round trips of up to 150 miles.
  • Perform routine and repetitive work in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Walk, bend, and stoop, often on uneven terrain while at times carrying up to 40 pounds.
  • Load and transport equipment and gear.
  • Safely operate motor vehicles, ATV’s and other specialized equipment and power tools.  Transports supplies and equipment using trailers to remote sites.

Union
This position is covered by a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between the State of Washington, Department of Fish & Wildlife, and the Washington Association of Fish and Wildlife Professionals (WAFWP).  As a condition of employment you must either join the union and pay union dues, or pay the union a representational or other fee within 30 days of the date you are put into pay status.
