Soils and Stormwater In this workshop, you will get an overview of the Washington State Soil Best Management Practices (BMP) requirements. This will cover strategies for minimizing impacts of new constructions sites and building soil for healthy landscapes.
Presented by: Lorraine Brooks is the Department Head of the Horticulture Program at Edmonds Community College. She has worked in the field of horticulture for more than 30 years in landscape management and education.
Managing Landscapes that Build Soil, the Gardeners’ Role in the Carbon Cycle: Keys to building soil and reducing your carbon footprint This presentation will give focus to photosynthesis; protecting biomass; biodiversity of plants; water availability; testing soil for carbon; using biochar (special attention to greenhouse use); and benefits of using livestock. Going Green – A Case Study of Landscaping Practices at Lake Washington Institute of Technology. Learn how to manage costs while increasing aesthetics through sustainable landscaping practices. Topics will cover water management, plant selection, wildlife and mulching techniques. Presenter: Liesl Zappler has been organically gardening in the PNW for over 20 years. She was the Landscape and IPM Coordinator for Swedish Medical Center and helped to write IPM policies for Swedish Medical Center, Lake Washington Institute of Technology, the Seattle School District, Sound Transit and the City of Issaquah. Liesl received 5-Star EnviroStars awards for Swedish Medical Center’s Issaquah, First Hill and Cherry Hill campuses. Liesl received the King County Green Globe award in 2013, which is the County’s highest environmental honor.
Designing and Maintaining with Biological Integrity: Are You Serving the Demand?” Customers are demanding more ecologically-based solutions. Have you added these services to your bottom line? With simple adjustments to your program, you can serve up a twist by adding biological control to your pallet. Beyond the basics of utilizing good compost and sustainable design, let’s not only invite beneficial insects to the garden, but let’s look at how to solve some pest and disease pressure that we have come to expect in the Pacific Northwest. Vine weevil, fleas in dog parks, cranefly, wireworm, fleabeetle will be our topics du jour! Presenter: Alison Kutz is the owner of Sound Horticulture, which has served greenhouse growers and farmers since 2000 with beneficial insects and biological controls. Sound Horticulture offers microbial products, consultation, support, and service based on 35 years of experience in the Nursery Industry. Its mission is to help growers integrate the most ecologically-sound solutions to an array of plant production challenges.
