General position overview:

The Center for Biological Diversity seeks a dynamic, creative and experienced campaigner to lead a growing campaign to advance a just and wildlife-friendly renewable energy future. This position will be part of our groundbreaking Population and Sustainability program, which addresses the links between rampant human population growth, overconsumption and consumer choices, and species extinction due to resource depletion and environmental degradation.

 

The ideal candidate for this position must have excellent communication and organizational skills; the ability to work independently and collaboratively; an ability to think creatively and strategically; a solid understanding of the politics, policy and environmental impacts of renewable energy ‘ particularly distributed solar energy; and a familiarity with wildlife, human population and sustainability issues. The Renewable Energy Campaigner reports to the Population and Sustainability director and works closely with research, conservation, organizing and communications staff.

 

Main duties:

  • Develop and execute advocacy and education campaigns, initiatives, outreach and policy positions that advance a fully renewable energy future and increase public understanding and access to wildlife-friendly renewable energy sources, particularly distributed solar energy.
  • Identify and launch strategic policy and corporate campaigns that support a rapid increase in renewable energy sources with minimal environmental impact.
  • Develop relationships with allies to engage with and help build the movement toward a fully renewable, just and wildlife-friendly energy future.
  • Help develop and articulate our vision for America’s energy future, with an emphasis on renewable energy, efficiency, environmental justice and endangered species protection.
  • Work with program and communications staff to engage and activate allies and supporters through creative media, action alerts and other tools in support of a sustainable energy future.
  • Play a key role in helping the Population and Sustainability program emerge as a national leader and voice on energy, population and consumption issues.
  • Serve as a public expert on energy issues, including generating press releases, reports and op-eds; giving interviews; and otherwise working with the media.
  • Collaborate with other staff across programs to develop and coordinate renewable energy policies and campaigns.
  • Track national policy, communications and trends on energy production and use, human population growth, sustainability issues and the environment.
  • Draft and produce website text, reports, factsheets and other educational materials regarding the energy campaign, including policy positions and sustainable-lifestyle information.

 

Essential qualities, qualifications and skills:

  • Minimum of three to five years’ experience organizing or campaigning for energy, wildlife, environmental justice or similar issues experience ‘ national-level preferred.
  • Proven experience in creating and executing strategic outreach, education and/or advocacy campaigns renewable energy-related preferred.
  • Proven experience motivating and organizing individuals and groups to take action online and offline.
  • Proven experience working with coalitions and diverse groups of people.
  • Strong working knowledge of state-level and national policies and trends related to distributed solar energy, including pricing, net metering, community solar and grid connectivity; economics knowledge a plus.
  • A passion for and experience with working on the effects of renewable energy on the environment and endangered species, with a desire to be a national leader on these issues.
  • A demonstrated ability to translate complex policy into clear advocacy opportunities.
  • Demonstrated project management and organizational skills
  • Exceptional written and verbal communications skills.
  • Experience with media outreach, interviews and public speaking.
  • The ability to balance multiple tasks and deadlines in a busy environment.
  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in environmental studies, political science or other relevant field, or equivalent knowledge and experience preferred.
  • Nonprofit experience preferred.
