Purpose/ Summary: The Outreach Education Manager manages Pacific Science Center’s Outreach Education programming in order to expand the institution’s role as a driving force for science education. The Outreach Education team provides programming to schools, communities, libraries, and preschools in the Pacific Northwest, both during the school day and in out-of-school settings. This role is responsible for establishing and executing departmental vision and goals, creating and tracking budgets, guiding curriculum and program development, and leading ongoing evaluation. This role manages the Outreach Education Supervisors to ensure successful delivery of programs and to hire and create a successful team. |
Supervisory Responsibilities: This position currently supervises two Outreach Education Program Supervisors. |
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Define department goals and priorities and set strategies for the success of existing and new Outreach programming that align with best practices in informal education and the mission of the institution.
- Oversee development of new program offerings, including curriculum and exhibit development.
- Direct curriculum and program maintenance for current programs, including program evaluation.
- Work effectively with school staff, community leaders, and community organizations to maintain and develop mutually beneficial partnerships.
- Oversee the hiring of program staff and manage staff expectations and performance through training, observation, advising and mentoring, professional development, staff evaluations, disciplinary actions and HR procedures.
- Create and maintain an accurate budget for all programs and maintain accurate records and account balances, including the completion of revenue reports, monthly transfers and purchasing records.
- Work with the Director of PreK-12 Engagement to develop and implement strategies for enabling broad access to outreach programs in under-served communities/for under-served populations.
- Maintain accurate records of program attendance, expenses and revenue for reports.
- Oversee details, delivery and budgets for special and grant funded projects and create and maintain plan for subsidy distribution in conjunction with Registration staff.
- Ensure quality control of customer communication materials including marketing and promotional materials and registration (with the Registration Department), confirmation and pre-visit materials.
- Collaborate with the Marketing team in the development of marketing materials and marketing strategies.
- In coordination with the Contracts and Risk Manager, set safety procedures and protocol for outreach, programming and vehicle fleet use and oversee staff safety training and maintenance of program materials and vehicles.
- Collaborate with Development staff to identify and help attain funding from donors and foundations, as well as corporate sponsorships as appropriate.
- Serve on the leadership team for the Science Engagement and Outreach Division
- Fill in as needed if a staffing emergency arises.
- Other duties as assigned, including alternative service.

Knowledge of:

- Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) principles with respect to informal curriculum development and delivery
- Effective teaching and presentation strategies
Skills:
- Supervise and support staff, responding appropriately to the varying professional needs of individual staff; serve as member of a highly diverse team
- Exercise good judgment, following safety procedures, and alerting others of problems when necessary
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and file sharing programs
- Excellent customer service skills including the ability to serve Pacific Science Center staff and outside contacts in a courteous and professional manner
- Proven verbal and written communication skills

- Be adaptive, innovative and a quick study: quickly learn and apply new science content, policies and procedures

- Work flexible shifts as programs are scheduled, including evenings and weekends

Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Science, Education or related field
- At least two years of supervisory, leadership and mentoring experience
- Teaching at the elementary level, delivery of interactive programs or presentation of formal/informal programs
- At least two years of budgetary management experience
- Valid driver’s license, or the ability to obtain on upon hire (good driving record also required)
Desired Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Education or Museum Studies, Teaching Certificate or Museum Studies graduate-level certificate
- Fluent in Spanish, Vietnamese or other language desired

Physical Demands/ Working Conditions:
This position can be physical in nature and may require the employee to present all-school assemblies and exhibits, and teach up to six 45 minute lessons in one day. This position may occasionally travel up to five days at a time to communities in the Pacific Northwest. Physical demands often associated with this role include the ability to see/hear/talk, stand/walk/sit, kneel/squat/bend/reach, lift 50lb tubs unassisted, and carry/climb while holding lesson materials/supplies, and load/unload vans. Program delivery is conducted at off-site locations and logistical planning and training takes place on-site at Pacific Science Center which at times can be a moderate to loud environment. This position is required to drive 15 passenger vans and minivans to and from program sites. The manager is expected to adhere to a dress code including using proper safety equipment. Other position specific conditions include exposure to dust, fumes, chemicals (liquid nitrogen, acids and bases, irritants, latex). The office space for this position is located on the second floor. |
