The Adopt-A-Stream Foundation is a private non-profit corporation.  Our mission is “to teach people how to become stewards of their watersheds.”  That mission is carried out by: producing environmental education materials; conducting Streamkeeper Academy classes; restoring damaged fish and wildlife habitat; and conducting natural resource inventories; research and surveys.  Learn more at www.streamkeeper.org.

During 2018, we are going to complete several significant stream restoration projects.  A highly motivated team oriented individual with excellent natural resource knowledge and skills is being sought to join our small professional staff in January.  The successful candidate will be assigned to our fish and wildlife habitat restoration team that focuses most of their time providing local communities with stream and wetland restoration technical assistance.

Expect to spend up 50% of your time working in salmon stream environments and with occasional work on evenings and weekends. You can also expect that excellent job performance will lead to promotion opportunities.  The following provides more details about this 40-hour/week position that has a flexible work schedule with every other Friday off.

Salary/Benefits:  $15-19 hr DOQ.  Upon completion of a 6-month probation period, employer contributes 12% of salary to a Simplified Employee Pension (SEP); and provides 8 hours paid sick leave per month, and 8 hours paid vacation per month.

Duties/Responsibilities:

1.Project Management: Under the direction of a Senior Ecologist, assist in the management of stream restoration, environmental education, and research projects.  In addition, you will participate in drafting and tracking project budgets and maintaining positive relationships with clients.

2.Construction Labor: Work with a team of ecologist and technicians constructing fish and wildlife habitat restoration projects, e.g., culvert removal/replacement and bridge construction, installation of large log and stump fish habitat features, and stream bank/wetland vegetation restoration and invasive plant removal.  On occasion, you will also be involved in trapping and removing fish from stream restoration work sites.

3.Public Relations: “Door to door” contact with private landowners to request permission to conduct survey work or to construct stream/wetland restoration projects.  Recruit and coordinate volunteers to assist with restoration projects

4.Natural Resource Inventory: Conduct salmon habitat and non-point pollution surveys, enter field information into a computer database, and assist data analysis.  On occasion, you will be trapping and or electro-shocking fish and be required to identify species.

5.Environmental Education:  Assist staff with promoting and conducting Streamkeeper Academy classes at the Adopt-A-Stream Foundation’s NW Stream Center.

6.Complete other duties as assigned.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:

1.Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.

2.Must have the natural resource knowledge and physical ability to conduct biological surveys and habitat restoration work in rough terrain in all weather conditions.

3.Must maintain a positive attitude in all work environments, be able to adapt quickly to new situations and project environments, and have a desire to learn.

4.Must be physically fit and able to lift up to 40 pounds.

5.Basic computer skills such as word processing, database, and spreadsheet skills are required. Skill in both PC and Apple computer systems preferred.

6.Must have the ability to learn and become proficient in the use of GIS software (Arc View) and computer aided drafting systems.

7.Organizational skills and the ability to multi-task and manage time efficiently are essential.

8.Thorough knowledge of NW stream and wetland ecology, and salmonids and their habitat is required.

9. Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated experience conducting presentations to small audiences.  Must have the ability to communicate natural resource science in terms that a layperson can understand.

Minimum Education/Experience:

BS natural resources or related field and one year of experience related to the duties and responsibilities outlined in the job description above.  Must have experience using a variety of hand tools typically used in stream restoration work.  Experience using GPS and laser level preferred.  Relevant graduate school course work may be considered as a substitute for work experience.
