This position is responsible for coordinating and assisting with the implementation of Wildlife Program goals, objectives, assignments, and activities within the Wildlife Diversity Division to effectively contribute to the Agency’s goals of providing healthy and diverse fish and wildlife populations for Washington citizens through operational excellence and professional service.
Key responsibilities include:

• Coordinate and implement the Department’s bat conservation and white-nose response, management, and research activities.
• Develop methods and strategies to evaluate the baseline health of bat populations and the distribution of white-nose syndrome in Washington working with wildlife veterinarians, staff biologists, and partners.
• Compile and analyze data and assess, interpret and present findings in a report for action items.
• Work closely with the WDFW staff to coordinate passive surveillance of bats for WNS and other pathogens of concern.
• Collaboratively develop a study to better understand the seasonal movements of Washington’s bats.
• Communicate with the public, private and public landowners, and governmental and non-governmental agencies on WDFW’s bat conservation and white-nose syndrome management activities.
• Develop and submit proposals to obtain funding to continue or implement new initiatives consistent with WDFW priorities.

A Bachelor’s degree in wildlife management/biology/ecology, natural resource sciences, disease ecology, or environmental science
AND
Three years of professional level experience in a wildlife management or disease-related field.
OR
A Master’s degree in the applicable science will substitute one year of the required experience. A Ph.D. in the applicable science may be substituted for two years of the required experience.
OR
Equivalent education/experience.
 
A valid State driver’s license
 
Preferred experience includes:

• Two years of experience in project management and/or disease ecology and epidemiology.
• Experience working with bats.
• Master of Science in wildlife management/biology/disease ecology/epidemiology, natural resource sciences, or environmental science.

• Effectively and safely operate additional equipment and tools including: radios and other mobile communication devices, digital cameras, spotting scopes/binoculars, global positioning systems, radio telemetry, and motion activated cameras.

Working Conditions
The successful candidate must be willing and able to:

• Work long, irregular hours outside the regular business hours of 8:00 am – 5:00 pm including evenings and weekends
• Travel on a frequent basis
• Work in the field up to 50% of the time
• Work in inclement weather walking over difficult terrain
• Bend, stoop, and carry up to 50 pounds
• Load and transport equipment and gear
• Safely operate motor vehicles in field situations

Union
This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the State of Washington, Department of Fish & Wildlife and the Washington Association of Fish and Wildlife Professionals (WAFWP), which contains a “union security” provision.  This means that, as a condition of employment, you must either join the union and pay union dues, or pay the union a representation or other fee within 30 days of the date you are put into pay status.
