Position Overview
Work with educators and others in providing technical assistance, training and information to school districts and tribal communities to ensure that school districts and tribal communities remain current with Native American curriculum and that Native American students have equal access to all educational programs and opportunities. Implement legislation as it relates to Indian Education. Serve as OSPI’s liaison to the Tribes, Tribal Compact Schools, Tribal communities, and Governor’s Office of Indian Affairs. - Duties

Role
As defined under RCW 28A.300.105, this position is required to:- Provide leadership, technical assistance, and advocacy to promote the academic success of all American Indian and Alaska Native students;
- Provide leadership and assistance to school districts in meeting the educational needs of American Indian and Alaska Native students; Facilitate the development and implementation of curricula and instructional materials in Native languages, culture and history, and the concept of tribal sovereignty pursuant to RCW 28A.320.170;
- Coordinate technical assistance for Tribal Compact Schools, and public schools that serve American Indian and Alaska Native students;
- Develop and implement the following support services for the purposes of increasing the number of American Indian and Alaska Native teachers and principals; providing continued professional development for teachers, principals, and paraeducators who serve American Indian and Alaska Native students:
- Recruitment and retention
- Academic transition programs
- Academic financial support
- Teacher preparation
- Teacher induction
- Professional development
- Facilitate the inclusion of Native language programs in school districts’ curricula.
- Work with all relevant agencies and committees to highlight the need for accurate, useful data that is appropriately disaggregated to provide a more accurate picture regarding American Indian and Alaska Native students.
- Report to the Governor, the Legislature, and the Governor’s Office of Indian Affairs on an annual basis, regarding the state of Indian education and the implementation of all state laws regarding Indian education, specifically noting system successes and accomplishments, deficiencies, and needs.
- Lead the Washington State Native American Advisory Council (NAAC), in collaboration with ONE staff.
Key Responsibilities- This position requires the ability to foster and maintain good working relationships with all key education partners, particularly the Tribes and tribal communities. Building and maintaining strong relationships are key elements to the success of the Office of Native Education.
- This position provides leadership in the improvement of education resources for Native American children throughout the state; provides technical assistance to school districts and tribes; manages and monitors the Office of Native Education budget.
- This position advises and consults with school boards, school administrators, educators, and teachers on matters pertaining to the involvement of Native families and community members in the education of Native American children.
- In collaboration with ONE staff, provide oversight of the maintenance and update of our new, (STI) Since Time Immemorial: Tribal Sovereignty In Washington State website.
- In collaboration with ONE staff, provide oversight of the training for the STI tribal sovereignty curriculum to teachers and staff who work with Native American students; but who also work with all students.
- This position maintains the involvement of Native people in public/tribal education, and collaborates with other groups in multicultural education effort.
- This position develops and implements plans and policies to improve the education of Native American students.
- Respond to all inquiries received from the field or fellow agency staff members and co-workers, in a timely and professional manner.
- Managing and directing the work of the group, providing them with the tools and training necessary to perform their jobs.
- Leadership responsibilities; providing staff with guidance and coaching, monitoring progress and addressing performance.
- Conducting annual employee performance reviews and expectations for classified staff, annual review period is September 1st through August 31st.
- Work closely with and monitor trial service and probationary employees and provide interim evaluations.
- Grow staff skills and abilities through training opportunities, mentorship, and regular feedback.
- Ensuring staff are well informed and connected with agency mission, vision, value and goals.
- Establishing a workplace that is fair, safe, professional, and free from discrimination or harassment.

The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction is seeking candidates who exemplify the characteristics and competencies of the following profile:- Project management skills
- Master’s Degree in Education or related field.
- Management experience.
- Five years of experience in program administration at the district level or above.
- Experience providing training and support of Native students, tribes and community.
- Experience presenting and providing information to various audiences in a concise and efficient manner.
- Experience working as a collaborative member of intra and/or inter-agency teams.
- Skills to communicate effectively in both written and oral form to a broad and diverse audience, including public speaking.
- Experience writing legislative reports, letters, and other communications as needed to legislators, superintendents, and other education partners.

Compensation
The annual compensation for the position is $65,000-75,660 per year and will depend upon experience, educational background, and qualifications. Washington State has a generous benefit package including health, dental, and life insurance, retirement, and an optional deferred compensation program. This position serves at the pleasure of the Superintendent and is civil service exempt.
