- About the Position
The Parks Maintenance Department seeks a self-motivated, hard-working individual with good interpersonal skills to fill a vacant temporary Maintenance Worker I position. This position’s primary focus is in the field of Arboriculture. (THIS POSITION IS NOT REPRESENTED BY THE AFSCME UNION)
Ideal Candidate Profile
The successful candidates will possess the following attributes:- Minimum one year of general work experience in the field of Arboriculture
- The ability to demonstrate proper use of all associated arboriculture equipment (I.E. chainsaws, wood chippers, etc.)
- A general knowledge of various climbing techniques to include “rope and saddle” for the purpose of performing spur-less tree work
- Knowledgeable in technical rigging for the purpose of performing arboriculture work
- The ability to learn and execute technical aerial rescues
- The ability to effectively communicate to a wide variety of individuals
- The ability to represent the City of Olympia in a professional manner at all times
- The ability to follow technical directions, demonstrate mechanical aptitude, as well as the ability to manage time effectively and make proper decisions in the field
- The ability to operate safely and maintain awareness in sometimes stressful and/or chaotic environments

- Maintenance Worker I staff are responsible for basic, general upkeep, repair and/or cleaning in and around parks buildings, structures, and property
- Assist with all maintenance activities associated with Parks facilities
- Perform basic pruning, fertilizing and transplanting; brush and litter removal; operation of tractors, hand/power mowers, edgers and fertilizer application devices; and may be trained on specialized equipment
- Punctual, regular and reliable attendance is essential for successful job performance
- Minimum qualifications & Requirements
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to perform strenuous physical labor and work outdoors in heavily trafficked areas, in all types of weather, and on all types of surfaces
- Skill in the use of a wide variety of power and hand tools, equipment, and machinery used in parks maintenance
- Use good judgment in the operation of potentially dangerous equipment and while working at potentially hazardous work sites while maintaining constant awareness of hazards and continuously applying safe work habits and practices
- Listen to, remember, and apply work directions, instructions, information, and practices in daily communication with supervisors and co-workers
- Safely drive and operate light duty vehicles and equipment such as pickup trucks, off road service and transport vehicles, and other related conveyances
Experience/Education
- One year of general work experience in the field of Arboriculture required
- Current possession of (preferred), or ability to obtain a Washington state traffic control flaggers card is required
- Current possession of (preferred), or ability to obtain a 1st Aid/CPR card is required
- International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) certification preferred
Special Requirement
- A valid Washington State Drivers’ License is required
- A Washington State Commercial Driver’s License is preferred

- Contacts
- Maintenance Workers I have daily contact with other crew members for the purpose of work coordination.
- However, City crews often work in highly visible locations and may be required to respond to questions from interested citizens.
- It is important for all employees to respond to citizens with tact and patience.
- If questions cannot be answered on-site, the worker is responsible for referring the citizen to the Lead Worker or other Department staff for assistance.
Supervision
- This position will typically work with a Maintenance Worker II. There will also be times where this position will be working independently
Accountability
- The employee is accountable for performing assigned tasks in a quality, timely, efficient manner.
Working Conditions (Working conditions will vary by assignment.)
- Maintenance Workers may work in hazardous areas, including street surfaces, rights-of-way, medians, ditches, pits and underground vaults; and around heavy equipment or potentially dangerous tools.
- Assignments may be outside and may occasionally require work in inclement weather and/or dirty, wet noisy or cramped work sites.
- This position requires the physical ability to perform manual tasks, and mobility to navigate all types of surfaces and terrain.
