SALARY RANGE: 
Sophomore and under:  $2,088 per month
Junior: $2,262 per month
Senior: $2, 448 per month
Graduate Student: up to $2,963 per month

POSITION PROFILE:

Biologists in the DNR Forest Resources Program support the Timber Sales Program by providing consultation on timber activities as they relate to wildlife habitat and works with region staff to improve habitat conservation. This year, we are surveying for Northern Spotted Owls and conducting owl habitat assessments as well as monitoring several goshawk nest sites across the region.  This position is intended to be part-time initially and requires some evening and weekend availability. Minimum of 24 hours per week and up to 40 hours/week. Flexible start date (approximately April 16) with a 3-month duration.

Interns work directly with the region biologist. The internship program is designed to give students educational and hands-on work experience in a variety of duties that will include:

  • Conducting Northern Spotted Owl surveys to protocol.
  • Nest searches and surveys for Northern goshawks.
  • Assessing Northern Goshawk habitat in protection areas.
  • Learning to use Bioacoustics for detection.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Applicant must be a student majoring in Biology, Ecology, Natural Resource Management or related field and will be returning to school in a following quarter/semester.
  • Applicant must also be willing and able to hike long distances over rough terrain and work evenings/nights.

Candidates should have an interest in natural resources and have work or recreational experience driving on logging roads.

SPECIAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS 

  • Ability to work on uneven terrain in all weather conditions.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. Employees who drive for state business, whether in a state or privately owned vehicle, are required to possess a valid license and abide by all other driver responsibility requirements.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire.
  • Overnight travel may be required.

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
State Employees are members of the Washington Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS).  New employees have the option of two employer contributed retirement programs.  For additional information, check out the Department of Retirement Systems‘ web site.
 
Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP).  This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
 
Vacation (Annual Leave)
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.
