The King County Wastewater Treatment Division (WTD) seeks several full-time summer interns. Assignments will be to one of the following areas providing experience in the practical application of coursework in a large-scale urban infrastructure system.

WORK SCHEDULE: In most cases, the work schedule will be Monday – Friday, 8-hour days. Positions will report to various King County Wastewater Treatment Division locations. Please see descriptions below for additional details.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Some positions require field work with exposure to safety sensitive areas. Positions may require the ability to traverse in rapidly changing construction areas.

 Job Duties:
Learning Objectives and Descriptions of Internship Opportunities 1.  Communications / Strategic

Research, writing, and content development for articles, written materials, blog articles, eNewsletters and more. Coordinate the production of written materials, graphics, films and videos. Act as a regular contributor to WTD’s social media channels. Support WTD’s goals for digital engagement and in-person community engagement.

 Requirements:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and willingness to ask for help and guidance
  • Interest in current events, local government and environmental issues
  • Photography or design skills are a plus
  • Ability to bend and lift in order to load vehicles and set up materials and displays
  • A valid Driver’s License or alternate ability to get to meetings and field sites not served by public transit at varying times of the day.

This work will be best performed and of most benefit to a student pursuing studies in public relations, advertising, journalism, strategic communications, creative writing or marketing.

2.  Community Relations

Provide community relations support for multiple projects required under the combined sewer overflow (CSO) consent decree, including large traditional infrastructure projects, green stormwater infrastructure projects, and the RainWise Program which is a rebate program for property owners to capture stormwater on their property. Intern will participate in planning and hosting public events, developing and distributing communication materials, attending community events, making connections with community members. Intern will participate in soliciting “big roof” projects as potential RainWise demonstration projects.

 Requirements:

  • Ability to work independently and willingness to ask for help and guidance
  • Ability to set office hours during the work week and to attend community events on evenings and weekends
  • Ability to bend and lift in order to load vehicles and set up materials and displays
  • A valid Driver’s License or alternate ability to get to meetings and field sites not served by public transit at varying times of the day.

This work will be best performed and of most benefit to a student with a Public Affairs, Environmental, Planning, or Communications Community outreach, public participation, green stormwater focus.

3. Construction Management Become familiar with construction contract documents. Understand and develop knowledge of construction techniques commonly used in the construction of wastewater facilities

  • Ability to collect and make decisions regarding data in the field

4.  Drafting Assist maintenance personnel with design, categorization, and maintenance of wastewater treatment processes and components. Collect information from the field and verify information in existing drawings, and markup Piping and Instrument Diagrams and mechanical drawings.

 

Requirements:

  • Familiarity with AutoCad,
  • Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office products
  • Organization skills
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to collect and make decisions regarding data in the field
  • A valid Driver’s License

This work will be best performed and of most benefit to a student with an Engineering, Process Flow dynamics, Computer Aid Drafting focus. (Civil, Chemical, Electrical or Mechanical)

5. Engineering-Civil / Mechanical / Environmental

Assisting project engineer with review of Submittals, help develop responses to construction contractor requests for information, attend construction meetings, site visits, review pay estimates, develop layouts of the new generator in the existing generator room work with structural engineer on floor and wall modifications.  Revise construction drawings and specs based on review comments. Continue development of layout and structural alternative for a sodium hypochorite tank farm. Assist engineer in the response to questions and needs of plant and offsite staff.

 Requirements:

  • Successful completion of a minimum of one year’s course work after being admitted to a college or university’s civil, mechanical engineering department
  • Hydraulic analysis, grading design, planning, layout of mechanical equipment, fittings and piping
  • Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office products
  • Ability to take photos of existing facilities and conditions
  • A valid Driver’s License

This work will be best performed and of most benefit to a student with a civil, mechanical or environmental engineering focus.

6.  Engineering-Energy

Coordinate and implement identified efficiency-related efforts as required, tour and inventory various wastewater facilities, gain familiarity with what an energy group in a progressive wastewater utility does on a daily basis.

 

Requirements:

  • Successful completion of a minimum of one year’s course work after being admitted to a college or university’s engineering  / environmental Science / Building Systems department
  • Detail-oriented and self-starter
  • Eagerness to learn new technologies and apply them
  • Interest in numbers and calculations
  • Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office products
  • A valid Driver’s License

This work will be best performed and of most benefit to a student with an energy efficiency, sustainability/green technology, trades, environmental science, electrical and or industrial mechanical engineering focus.

7.  Engineering-Mechanical or Chemical Engineering

Assisting the Plant Project Engineer on mechanical projects ranging from design to construction. Duties may include in plant analysis of piping, pump & equipment problems or implementation of corrective action.

Requirements:

  • Successful completion of a minimum of one year’s course work after being admitted to a college or university’s mechanical or chemical engineering department
  • Detail-oriented and self-starter
  • Eagerness to learn new technologies and apply them
  • Knowledge and understanding of CAD
  • Knowledge of piping design & layout, pump selection
  • Project Management
  • A valid Driver’s License

This work will be best performed and of most benefit to a student with an Mechanical or Chemical Engineering focus.

8. Finance/ Data Analysis / Audit / Document Management

Assist the WTD Internal Auditor in analyzing data provided by local Sewer Agencies using Excel to identify discrepancies and assist in moving and organizing documents between an internal server, SharePoint, and OneDrive.

Requirements:

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite or similar software, Excel
  • Exceptional analytical skills and attention to details
  • Ability to perform independent research and write reports
  • Effective communication and presentation skills

This work will be best performed and of most benefit to a student with Business, Accounting, Auditing, Public Administrative focus.

9. Operations Process Control Assist with the collection, review and troubleshooting of regulatory, process and energy-related data for treatment plant facilities. Assist with collecting data and information for capital projects. Assist with data collection and process oversight of special operational projects or pilot facilities.

  • Advanced Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Advanced analytical and writing skills
  • Organization skills
  • Detail-oriented and self-starter
  • Strong communications skills
  • A valid Driver’s License

This work will be best performed and of most benefit to a student in the 3rd – 4th year of college in civil / environmental engineering or environmental sciences related to water treatment and wastewater treatment applied hydraulics and science focus.

10. Project Information – Financial cost model / performance analysis

Assist in the preparation of financial cost model performance analysis. Work with financial data looking for trends and/or anomalies. Understand how information systems are used to track and forecast for capital construction projects.

Requirements:

  • Excellent Word, Excel and Power Point skills.
  • Data visualization and presentation skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
  • Must have good organizational skills.
  • Must be action-oriented.
  • Ability to review technical documents

This work will be best performed and of most benefit to a student with a Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, Information Systems, Public Administration and Public Finance focus.

11. Project Management-Capital Infrastructure

Assist in the preparation of project scopes of work, budgets, work breakdown structures, schedules, and project deliverables. Assist in project and program analysis and reporting.

Requirements:

  • Ability to create documents using Visio, Word, Excel and Power Point.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
  • Must have good organizational skills.
  • Must be action-oriented.
  • Prior experience with project scheduling tools and techniques is a plus
  • A valid Driver’s License

This work will be best performed and of most benefit to a student with a Business Administration, Project Management, Engineering, Construction Management, or Architecture focus.

12. Supply Chain Management – Inventory Warehouse

Gain an understanding of inventory management, inventory control, expediting, and warehouse management. Duties could include: Input and research inventory and disbursement records, inventory adjustments and parts history/usage. Review daily computer reports and reconcile computer reports with source documents. Expedite parts delivery from multiple warehouses; pick up and deliver items as required. Perform basic warehousing and stocking functions using material handling equipment, load and unload items and acknowledge receipt of goods and services. Assist with physical inventory and cycle counting.

 

Requirements:

  • Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Organization skills
  • Attention to detail including spelling and typing accuracy
  • Strong communications skills
  • A valid Driver’s License

This work will be best performed and of most benefit to a student with a focus on inventory control, supply chain management, general business, warehouse management or other closely related field of study.
