WSDOT has an exciting position in our South Central Region for a Field Technician 3 In-Training (Transportation Technician 3 In-Training). This position will provide a number of support activities for construction, design, and PS&E phases of WSDOT projects.

Please Note: This position includes an approved In-Training plan, therefore, the successful candidate may be appointed at either the Transportation Technician 1, Transportation Technician 2, or Transportation Technician 3 depending on the qualifications:

Transportation Technician 3             $50,292-$67,584
Transportation Technician 2             $44,400-$59,724
Transportation Technician 1             $35,808-$47,820

Depending on the level of the role, the position may perform the following work:

  • Interpret highway construction plans, specifications, and special provisions
  • Monitor the contractor’s work related to excavation, grading, embankment, drainage, asphalt, paving, illumination, etc.
  • Measure and calculate quantities and prepares notes to support payment for activities inspected
  • May serve as inspector on grading, drainage, surfacing, paving and structures, traffic control, walls, and other highway construction activities
  • Perform field reviews, site investigation, and data collection; collect samples, measures and calculate quantities and prepare notes to support payment of activities inspected
  • Oversee the operation, adjustment, and maintenance of all types of survey equipment; direct layout and measurement surveys for construction projects
  • Assist in preparing and monitoring project schedules and project reporting activities
  • Perform a variety of skilled project development support tasks such as drafting final sheets for design reports, right of way plans, and contract plans
  • Perform a variety of semi-skilled construction office engineering tasks
  • Other duties as required

A successful candidate shall have:

  • Two years of experience performing semi-skilled technical engineering work as a Transportation Technician 2 or equivalent; OR a bachelor’s degree with a major study in engineering OR Certification as an Engineer-In-Training (EIT) OR Land Surveyor’s license
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Ability to work outside in all types of weather conditions
  • Ability and willingness to work out of town for extended periods of time
  • Ability to lift materials and equipment up to 50 lbs
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Ability to interpret, understand, communicate, and apply information related to contract plans and specifications as well as agreements and permits is a plus

Note: This position is covered by a union shop provision. Therefore, as a condition of employment, you are required to become a member of the PTE, Local 17, or arrange to pay that union a representational fee. The union shop requirement shall be effective on the first day of the month following the employee’s initial 30 days in this classification.

Insurance Benefits

Retirement and Deferred Compensation
State Employees are members of the Washington Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS).  New employees have the option of two employer contributed retirement programs.  For additional information, check out the Department of Retirement Systems‘ web site.
 
Employees also have the ability to participate in the Deferred Compensation Program (DCP).  This is a supplemental retirement savings program (similar to an IRA) that allows you control over the amount of pre-tax salary dollars you defer as well as the flexibility to choose between multiple investment options.
 
Vacation (Annual Leave)
You begin accruing vacation starting your first month of employment. Since we value your loyalty, the amount of vacation you can accrue increases the longer you work with us. Washington State supports members of the armed forces with 21 days paid military leave per year. Vacation accrues for full-time employees per WAC 357-31-165.

Social Security
All state employees are covered by the federal Social Security and Medicare systems. The state and the employee pay an equal amount into the system.

Full-time employees earn eight hours of sick leave per month. Paid sick leave may be used for reasons included in WAC 357-31-130.
