- About the Position
The Parks, Arts and Recreation Department is seeking an individual to assist in the day to day operations of our summer camps. The successful candidate will share their time between the different summer camps and The Olympia Center and work with various city staff to make sure camps run efficiently. You must complete the supplemental application portion of this packet in order to be considered for this position. This position’s preferred start and end dates are May 1 thru September 1 (May until June 18 will be part time). The actual start and end dates may be adjusted to meet the selected candidates availability.In addition to City Policy 20.4.1 (Standards of Conduct: Prohibited Behaviors), the following behaviors are prohibited for staff:
- Being alone with a camp participant. No Exceptions.
- Taking photos for personal use. Any photos taken during programs are the property of the City of Olympia.
- Posting to personal social media accounts during work time.
In addition, if a staff member/co-worker witnesses a prohibited behavior occur in the workplace, they are expected to report the behavior at the first opportunity (and no later than 24 hours following the incident) to their immediate supervisor, any full-time recreation supervisor, or any administrative staff within the Parks, Arts & Recreation Department.

- The essential functions of this position include but are not limited to:
Operational Expectations:
- Punctual, regular and reliable attendance is essential for successful job performance.
- This is a temporary, hourly non-benefited position. The work schedule varies depending on need, but for the most part will be working 8 hours during the day Monday through Friday. Weekend and evening work may be a necessary aspect of this position’s responsibilities.
- This position will primarily work out in the field but some office time may be necessary.
- Commitment to follow all Department and City Policies and Guidelines
Performance Expectations:
- Satisfying the needs of day to day operations of up to 8 camps at any given time. Some specific duties may include maintaining inventory, purchasing supplies, producing and delivering appropriate paperwork to camps, coaching staff members, helping with camper disciplinary issues, attending and participating in camp staff meetings and communicating with camper’s parents or guardians.
- Outstanding customer service will be a constant service delivery.
- Ability to relate and work with a broad and varied population; ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures to ambiguous situations while maintaining customer confidence; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Work will be performed in a professional manner that will support an ongoing image for the Department and the City.
- Minimum qualifications & Requirements
- Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to be self-directed in the work, while seeking and accepting feedback and direction when needed.
- Be highly organized and manage multiple tasks within tight timelines.
- Skill in interpersonal conflict/dispute resolution methods preferred.
- Knowledge of summer camp logistics and procedure.
- Formulate creative solutions to complex or sensitive issues.
- Ability to effectively supervise multiple staff members.
- Ability to work with multiple supervisors.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills. Editing experience and ability to produce accurate written materials. Great attention to detail to produce consistent, high-quality results.
- Able to work effectively with limited supervision.
- Implement effective and efficient practices in coordination of programs and processes.
- Work cooperatively with diverse staff as a member of a service-oriented team.
- Ability to work weekends and/or evenings may be required at times.
- Sufficient physical mobility to attend meetings, and special events at various locations indoors and outdoors is required, as well as the ability to lift 25 lbs.
- Respond in a positive, informed and professional manner on issues relating to camps.
Education/Experience:
- One year related experience in the camp settings and/or parks and recreation field.
Special Requirements:
- Strong computer and information technology skills are required. Ability to navigate our Registration Booking software (Activenet) is required in first 14 days but previous experience is not necessary.
- Possession of a valid Washington State Driver’s License.
- Candidates must be 18 years or older prior to starting work.
- This position may, at times, require an alternate work scheduled that includes weekends and/or evenings.
- In accordance with the Child and Adult Abuse Act (RCW 43.43), applicants considered for appointment will be required to undergo a criminal inquiry relating to crimes against persons that will be conducted prior to hire.

- Contacts:
- Program Aides are in constant contact with a diverse public participating in a wide variety of Parks, Arts and Recreation Programs, activities and events.
- Program Aides have frequent contact and interactions with others representing a variety of roles at various levels of authority both inside and outside the City. This position will communicate frequently with school district staff to coordinate use of facilities. These public contacts are conducted in a courteous, positive, service oriented and informative manner.
- Contacts may sometimes involve complaint resolution, working with unsatisfied customers, or firmly communicating rules and procedures to our participants and their families.
- Diplomacy, professionalism, enthusiasm and strong communication and interpersonal skills are required to gain cooperation and motivate others.
- Recreation Program Aides have frequent contacts with supervisors and other staff to plan and accomplish work, resolve service delivery problems and obtain training and direction as required.
Supervision:
- May supervise assigned programming and operations staff or volunteers.
Accountability:
- The Recreation Program Aide is accountable for the quality and effectiveness of assigned programs and events.
Working Conditions:
- Mobility sufficient for attendance at various meetings or to promote program activities is required.
- Field work may be necessary, depending on program assignment, requiring bending, stooping, climbing, walking over rough terrain, and exposure to weather conditions.
- Physical ability to carry or otherwise transport heavy boxes, displays, exhibit furnishings, etc. may be necessary.
- There is occasional stress related to meeting project and event time lines.
- Stress associated with angry, hostile individuals, or with victims, is routine in some positions.
