These internships are with the Aquatic Assessment and Monitoring Team. The team consists of a group of scientists that strive to answer some essential questions regarding the natural resource management of aquatic lands in the state of Washington. DNR scientists are involved in ecosystem research of lakes, rivers and marine habitats.
- The specific focus of one of these internships is to assist with management, maintenance and administration of the Acidification Nearshore Monitoring Network (ANeMoNe). Specific tasks will include helping the AAMT scientists to prepare, calibrate, and ship submersible sensor packages for deployment and retrieval, to develop and test mobile device data collection applications, to conduct benthic organism distribution and density collection, water, and sediment quality sampling and to organize trainings with citizen science volunteers.
- The other intern will have a specific focus to work on projects concerned with benthic organism population dynamics, habitat surveys and mapping. Tasks will include but are not limited to planktonic larvae sampling, juvenile and adult shrimp sampling, alternative methods of benthic organism control, sediment sampling, sonar depth surveys, underwater video surveys and GIS mapping.
- Qualifications
- REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be a currently enrolled graduate or undergraduate student, preferably in an environmental science, biology, ecology, natural resource science, or related field.
- Willingness to learn variety of skills on different projects.
- Flexibility with scheduling and task assignments.

SPECIAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
- Ability to work on uneven terrain in all weather conditions.
- Willingness from boats, docks, piers or in water.
- Must be able to lift and carry at least 20 pounds
- The incumbent in this position is required to travel.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Employees who drive for state business, whether in a state or privately-owned vehicle, are required to possess a valid license as defined in policy PO02-006 and abide by all other driver responsibility requirements.
- Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire.
