Title: Field Murrelet Biologist

Status: Full-time, Seasonal

Job Summary:
Multiple field biologists are needed to conduct surveys for a threatened seabird, the Marbled Murrelet, on private and government-owned lands in western Oregon (Lincoln City, Roseburg or other locations). Work may also be available in western Washington. Some positions may also involve surveying for Northern Spotted Owls for various projects in western Oregon and Washington. The work includes: conducting early morning surveys in mature and old-growth coniferous forests following a strict protocol, establishment of survey routes, collecting habitat data, conducting surveys, transcribing data and reporting to your supervisor. Applicants should be comfortable navigating and working alone in the forest under low light conditions and inclement weather. Some survey stations are located on roads, while most stations require hiking 15 min – 1 hour each way through steep and rugged terrain. Hiking into survey stations will be done in the dark as surveys start 45 minutes before sunrise. If needed for Northern Spotted owl surveys, the work includes: conducting night time calling surveys in mature and old-growth coniferous forests following a strict protocol, conducting daytime follow-up and activity center search surveys, establishment of survey routes and calling stations, collecting habitat data, conducting surveys, transcribing data and reporting to your supervisor. Applicants should be comfortable navigating and working alone in the forest under dark conditions and inclement weather. Some calling stations are located on roads, while most stations require hiking 15 min – 1 hour each way through steep and rugged terrain.

For the project we will provide a full survey certification training (April 16th to the 20th), housing, work vehicle and all field equipment. A vehicle bonus and mileage reimbursement will be provided to biologists using their own 4WD/AWD high clearance, reliable vehicle on the project.

Job Responsibilities:
• Locating and flagging survey stations;
• Conducting audio-visual surveys at dawn;
• Collecting and transcribing data accurately and legibly;
• Other related work as needed.

Qualifications:
• Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in biology, wildlife biology, or natural sciences required;
• Two-years of field experience, including experience conducting field research or surveys on birds required;
• Western bird identification skills
• Comfortable camping and surveying alone;
• Strong orienteering skills using compass, GPS, map and aerial photos;
• Capable of working alone, in the dark, in very steep terrain and in inclement weather;
• Effective communication skills and ability to work alone and in teams;
• Clean driving record; and
• Normal vision and hearing (hearing test required).

Wage: Salary at: $1,375 – $1646 DOE, paid twice monthly (equivalent of $15.86-$19.00/hour).

Expected Dates of Employment: Mid March/early April to the beginning of August, 2018.
Employment may be extended depending on work load, employee performance and additional projects that may become available.
