Tours usually consist of showing visitors the wheelhouse, engine room, galley, etc. while telling them about Sand Man’s history. She worked out of Olympia for 75 years, starting in 1910, and has been involved in the movement of sand, gravel, oysters, and more, so there is a lot to tell!
Docents will also have the opportunity to help out on maintenance projects. This can be anything from electrical work to carpentry to working on the engine itself.
It’s a great chance to spend some time on a boat (that you don’t have to pay for) while learning more about local and maritime history. The boat is open for five hours every Saturday and Sunday and shifts are available in 2.5 hour slots. You don’t have to volunteer every weekend, but we appreciate consistent volunteers!
Interest in engineering and ships.
Okay with talking to members of the public about the boat.
