Internship at Mason Conservation District: Environmental Engineering and Survey Technician

A Resource for Landowners:

Mason Conservation District has been working collaboratively since 1956 to help landowners in Mason County responsibly and efficiently manage their land and associated natural resources. As a non- regulatory agency, Mason Conservation District provides service solely at the request of the property owner. District staff will assess the landowner’s desired result and provide technical assistance and in some cases, financial assistance to achieve that goal. We provide confidential counsel to landowners without risk of regulation. Many of the Best Management Practices recommended by District staff improve environmental health while providing a sense of security and legal compliance.

Regardless of the size or scope, Mason CD looks forward to providing you with the knowledge and confidence needed to undertake your project.

Internship overview:

 

Mason Conservation District engineering department provides technical assistance, design services, and construction inspection on projects that address natural resource concerns. To provide these services, we maintain a team that includes a surveying crew, engineering technicians, and a civil engineer. The goal of the internship program is to provide sufficient training and field experience so that the intern would be a strong potential candidate to fill the Land Survey Crew Lead position by the end of the 6-9 month commitment. This volunteer intern position is available to interested applicants who complete our interview process and are able to commit to two or three college quarters or 6-9 months at a minimum of 20 hours a week.

Intern Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Field Surveys: Intern will work with existing land survey crew to gather data necessary for project designs. Survey crew regularly works 8-10 hour days in all weather conditions surveying sites that range from forests, wetlands, and rivers to agricultural and waterfront
  • AutoCAD: Intern will work with AutoCAD software to import collected survey data and create digital terrain models. Intern will work under engineering staff direction to aid with design drawings.
    • Other Projects: Intern will have the opportunity to pursue an independent project that aligns with the goals of Mason Conservation

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The minimum skills, specific areas of knowledge, and abilities that an individual is required to possess in order to be qualifies for this position are:

 

  • Basic Computer Skills; Microsoft Word and Excel in particular
  • Familiarity with natural resource issues
  • Ability to work outside, sometimes in adverse conditions, on a daily basis
  • Interest in operation of land survey data recording instrumentation (experience preferred)
  • Proficient in college Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry
  • Good communication skills
  • Work well as part of a team
  • Detail oriented
  • Self directed
